The qualification also introduces learners to proposal writing the execution of research and the compilation and interpretation of research data, based on a research project on an approved topic in the field of Biochemistry.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a more advanced knowledge of theoretical Biochemistry.
  2. Demonstrate more advanced laboratory skills that will enable them to enter the field of biochemical research.
  3. Interpret, evaluate and manipulate basic scientific information and results.
  4. Identify and solve scientific problems that require critical and creative thinking.
  5. Continue personal intellectual growth, efficient economic activity and positive contributions to society.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Criteria:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of theories, definitions and learning areas applicable to the area of study effectively:

    • Understand and apply relevant theories and definitions in the field of study.
    • Demonstrate a solid grasp of key learning areas through analysis and interpretation.
    • Utilize theoretical frameworks effectively to solve problems and address challenges.
  2. Collect data using scientific equipment, analyse data and then present the results graphically:

    • Gather data using appropriate scientific instruments and methods.
    • Analyse data using statistical tools and techniques.
    • Present findings graphically in a clear and concise manner, utilizing appropriate graphs, charts, and tables.
  3. Solve problems by applying laws and principles of science effectively:

    • Apply scientific laws and principles to solve complex problems.
    • Demonstrate a systematic approach to problem-solving, showing logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
    • Utilize scientific methodologies to derive solutions and draw conclusions.
  4. Solve various problems including processes that require a critical evaluation and interpretation for resolution:

    • Identify and define problems accurately, considering multiple perspectives and variables.
    • Evaluate and interpret data critically to formulate solutions.
    • Demonstrate the ability to think creatively and adapt solutions to changing circumstances.

Integrated Assessment Components:

  • Theory Papers (Four):

    • Each paper consists of theory questions to assess the candidate's understanding of key concepts and principles.
    • Candidates are required to demonstrate their knowledge effectively through written responses.
  • Research Project:

    • Candidates must successfully complete a research project of limited extent.
    • The project report should showcase the candidate's ability to collect, analyse, and present data in a structured format.
  • Final Oral Examination:

    • Each candidate undergoes a final oral examination conducted by the examination committee.
    • The oral examination assesses the candidate's overall understanding of the subject matter and the ability to articulate key concepts effectively.
  • Final Mark Allocation:

    • The examination committee, comprising academic staff and external moderators, allocates the final mark after the oral examination.
    • The final mark considers the candidate's performance in theory papers, research project, and oral examination.

By effectively demonstrating knowledge, analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking throughout the assessment components, candidates can showcase their proficiency in the field of study and receive a comprehensive evaluation of their capabilities.
