Purpose and Rationale

a) Higher-Level Chemistry Knowledge: Gain a deeper understanding of chemistry concepts beyond the Bachelor of Science level.

b) Analytical and Communication Skills: Develop the ability to interpret, evaluate, and manipulate scientific data and effectively present findings orally.

c) Practical Lab Skills: Acquire basic chemical skills necessary for working in governmental and industrial laboratories, and be introduced to conducting chemical research.

d) Teaching Proficiency: Develop strong chemical skills to teach the subject effectively in high schools and at the Ordinary Diploma level in Technikons.

e) Pathway to Postgraduate Studies: Provide an opportunity to progress into further postgraduate programs in the field of chemistry.

Outcomes

  1. Communicate effectively with peers, in a variety of ways, in the discourse of Chemistry.
  2. Demonstrate responsible and effective time-management and organization of projects and research, meeting personal objectives and negotiated deadlines.
  3. To interact with self-confidence, as a member of a team or group in a variety of discussion and problem-solving situations in a management environment. 4.Exhibit a detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of discipline specific theories and comprehends both the interactions between chemistry and the natural science environment and the multi-disciplinary nature of science.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to work independently in developing clear and deeper understanding of the specific areas of the subject.
  5. Manage data and information effectively, through their collection, storage, analysis, synthesis, presentation and critical evaluation, using a variety of analytical methods and techniques. 7.Exhibit necessary skills to successfully carry out research of limited scope.
