Purpose and Rationale

This qualification will provide an introduction to research in the field of chemistry and will provide a much-needed qualification for professional chemists with a capacity for independent research.

Outcomes

  1. Produce a detailed research mini dissertation based on research and project work.
  2. Present orally on aspects of the research.
  3. Writevreports on sub-areas and subproblems of the research topic.
  4. Demonstrate competence in specific areas of the field under study, including field and laboratory-based practical exercises.
  5. Present group work.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

  1. Detailed Research Mini Dissertation:

    • The research mini dissertation will involve a comprehensive study on the chosen research topic. It should include an introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations. The dissertation should be well-researched, properly structured, and supported by credible sources.
  2. Oral Reporting on Aspects of the Research:

    • Oral reporting will involve presenting key aspects of the research to a panel or audience. This could include presenting the research problem, methodology, main findings, and implications. The presentation should be clear, concise, and engaging, and should demonstrate a deep understanding of the research topic.
  3. Regular Written Reports on Sub-areas and Sub-problems of the Research Topic:

    • Regular written reports will involve providing updates on specific sub-areas and sub-problems of the research topic. These reports should include detailed analysis, progress updates, challenges faced, and proposed solutions. The reports should be well-organized, well-written, and should demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills.

Overall, the integrated assessment will require a combination of in-depth research, critical analysis, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. It will assess the student's ability to conduct research, analyze data, draw conclusions, and communicate their findings effectively both in writing and orally.
