Bachelor of Science Honours in Geology

Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - Earth and Space Sciences

Purpose and Rationale

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Geology) program in South Africa serves three main purposes:

  1. Professional Registration: The primary objective of the program is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the minimum requirement for registration as a Professional Geologist in South Africa. This is achieved through the completion of an Honours degree in Geology.

  2. Practical Application: The program aims to produce graduates who can effectively apply their geological expertise to solve various problems related to mining operations, including the extraction of existing ore deposits and the discovery of new ones. Furthermore, these skills can be utilized in the fields of engineering and environmental management.

  3. Educational Development: Another goal of the program is to provide educators with a solid foundation in earth sciences, enabling them to effectively teach subjects such as geography and related environmental studies. By equipping teachers with a comprehensive understanding of geology, the program contributes to the advancement of education in these areas.

Outcomes

  1. Will demonstrate an in depth understanding of the principles of Geology.
  2. Will demonstrate the ability to apply geological knowledge in solving problems of related fields.
  3. Will show the ability to search, retrieve, analyse, synthesise and communicate geological information.
  4. Will demonstrate the understanding of geological field and laboratory techniques

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Criteria for B. Sc (Hons) Geology Graduate

  3. Presentation of Oral and Written Geological Reports

    • The graduate will be able to present well-researched geological reports both orally and in written form, drawing from relevant literature.
  4. Field and Laboratory Work

    • Reports based on fieldwork and laboratory experiments will be presented by the graduate, showcasing practical application of geological knowledge.

Integrated Assessment Procedures

Formative Assessment:

  • Assessing the background knowledge of the student to identify areas for improvement.
  • Continuous evaluation during the module to track progress and provide feedback.
  • Reviewing laboratory and fieldwork activities to ensure understanding and application of concepts.

Summative Assessment:

  • Conducting seminars where students present their findings and solutions to geological problems.
  • Submission of comprehensive fieldwork reports demonstrating practical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Examinations testing theoretical knowledge and the application of geological principles.

By combining formative and summative assessment methods, the B. Sc (Hons) Geology program ensures that graduates are well-rounded individuals capable of analyzing, interpreting, and solving geological problems effectively.
