Purpose and Rationale

The purpose of this qualification is to train statisticians. It is designed to equip learners with the skills needed to conduct research in Mathematical Statistics and work as statisticians in various industries. Additionally, individuals who complete this qualification will also be prepared to become tertiary teachers in South Africa. By gaining a deeper understanding of Statistics, these graduates will contribute to the development and advancement of this field in the country.

    • The learner should be able to identify statistical problems within a given dataset and propose solutions.
  2. Using the correct statistical procedures:

    • The learner should apply the appropriate statistical techniques to analyze data effectively.
    • The learner should demonstrate an understanding of various statistical procedures and when to use them.
  3. Being familiar with the ethics and procedures of research methodology:

    • The learner should adhere to ethical standards in conducting research and handling data.
    • The learner should demonstrate knowledge of research methodologies and procedures.
  4. Communicating effectively the results of his/her research:

    • The learner should be able to clearly and effectively communicate the results of their research, both in written and oral form.
    • The learner should present findings in a logical and coherent manner.

Formative Assessment:

  • Background knowledge evaluation: Assessing the learner's prior knowledge and understanding of statistical concepts.
  • Knowledge of relevant computer packages: Evaluating the learner's proficiency in using statistical software for analysis.
  • Ability to write reports: Assessing the learner's skills in writing clear and concise research reports.
