Purpose and Rationale

  1. This course aims to equip the learners with specialised knowledge of Economics by studying various development-oriented and development-related branches of Economics. The focus will be on understanding the South African economy within the global context.

  2. The goal is to prepare the learners to pursue further studies at universities in South Africa and abroad, by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of Economics and its applications.

Outcomes

  1. Identify, analyse and formulate the intricacies of economic and policy analyses, and use them toward solving specific economic problems faced by an economic system.
  2. Link economics with other branches of knowledge in an inter-disciplinary manner. The learners will thus be expected to have organisational skills to work individually and as part of a team.
  3. Collect and analyse the necessary information in a coherent manner to do a proper analysis.
  4. Communicate the findings of research intelligently and in a coherent manner.
  5. Be able to further their studies at institutions of higher learning in South Africa and abroad.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment

  1. Continuous assessment, tests, and assignments play a crucial role in assessing student learning throughout the academic year. These assessments provide ongoing feedback to students and instructors, helping to identify areas of strength and weakness.

  2. Seminar presentations are another component of integrated assessment, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of course material while developing their communication and presentation skills. These presentations often involve research, critical analysis, and the ability to engage with peers and instructors.

  3. The end-of-year examination serves as a comprehensive assessment of students' knowledge and understanding of the entire course. It tests their ability to synthesize information, critically evaluate concepts, and apply their learning to new situations.

By combining these different assessment methods, integrated assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation of students' academic performance and helps to ensure that they have achieved the learning outcomes of the course.
