Purpose and Rationale

The Honours qualification in Chemistry aims to:

  1. Develop graduate-level knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in Chemistry to a higher level of analysis, interpretation, and understanding of intricate chemical concepts in all spheres of human endeavor.

  2. Prepare learners for careers in industry, business, and the public sector as qualified professional chemists.

  3. Enable learners to respond to the needs of society in chemical and related matters.

  4. Cultivate an appreciation for the value of education and Chemistry to society.

  5. Foster lifelong learning and cater to the career prospects of qualified learners in various fields open to professional chemists.

Overall, the Honours qualification in Chemistry serves as an academic foundation that equips learners with the necessary tools and knowledge to excel in the field of Chemistry and contribute meaningfully to society.

Outcomes

  1. Ability to identify, assess, formulate and solve complex problems of a chemical nature creatively, from their knowledge of the different domains of Chemistry.
  2. Demonstration of applied competence, i. e. That specified knowledge and understanding of concepts, and specified skills, over the chemical domain, have been mastered. That chemical knowledge and skills can be applied to solve real problems of a chemical nature, either individually or as part of a team. That process skills can be used to investigate chemical phenomena related to the material world.
  3. Correct use of Chemistry terminology and definitions.
  4. Effective communication using appropriate language and media### ability to prepare illustrative and interpretive scientific reports.
  5. Use of safe working practice in the chemical field.
  6. Ability to handle instrumentation and data processing relevant to the chemical field.
  7. Exploring education and career opportunities.
  8. Developing entrepreneurial opportunities.
  9. Communication skills (reporting and presentation of results).
  10. An appreciation of the contribution of Chemistry and chemists to society.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated assessment will be incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the degree is achieved through a variety of formative and summative assessment methods, including:

  1. Work-place assessments: Students will be evaluated based on their performance in real-world work environments related to their field of study. This will provide practical insights into their knowledge and skills application.

  2. Written examinations: Traditional written tests will be conducted to assess students' understanding of key concepts, theories, and principles within their field of study.

  3. Oral examinations: Students will also participate in oral exams where they will demonstrate their ability to articulate their knowledge, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities.

By utilizing a combination of these assessment methods, students will be thoroughly evaluated on their academic knowledge, practical skills, and ability to communicate effectively, ensuring that they have successfully met the specified outcomes of the degree program.
