Agriculture and Nature Conservation - Primary Agriculture
The Animal Science Qualification has been meticulously designed to equip learners with analytical, reasoning, communication, and computer literacy skills. By immersing learners in real-life problems faced by commercial, small-scale emerging livestock farmers, and the public sector, the program aims to hone their skills effectively. Upon completion, learners will have delved into four key disciplines within Animal Science:
Animal Breeding: Gain an understanding of genetic improvement qualifications for farm animals based on scientific principles.
Animal Physiology and Animal Health: Evaluate reproductive performance, understand methods to achieve desired performance, and grasp the complexities of maintaining animal health and welfare.
Animal Nutrition: Learn about economically feeding animals based on their requirements. Optimization of feeding strategies encompasses a blend of biological and economic elements associated with animals, feed, and the environment.
Animal Production Systems & Management: Develop a holistic view on beef, fat lamb, goats, and poultry. Learners will be able to spot and resolve production challenges linked with these systems, with a specific emphasis on small-scale farming systems.
Upon qualification, learners will acquire a heightened sense of social awareness and responsibility, as well as an understanding of their role as agricultural scientists in society. The robust academic foundation laid during this training enables learners to pursue postgraduate studies, fostering a continued interest in lifelong learning. This opens up formal and informal career opportunities across various fields for Animal Scientists & Technicians.

Learners will be expected to demonstrate problem-solving skills and show their understanding of the principles and applications of the discipline. Integrated assessments will include portfolios and workplace assessments, in addition to traditional written and oral examinations.
