Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

  • To provide advanced professional qualification: The qualification aims to offer learners an advanced level of expertise in library and information studies.

  • To demonstrate advanced knowledge: Enable learners to exhibit advanced knowledge in library and information studies by mastering theoretical aspects of the field.

  • To develop research skills and attitudes: Equip learners with the skills and attitudes necessary to conduct research using a variety of techniques effectively in the field of library and information Science.

  • To enhance information provision standards: Improve the standard of information provision in organizations and communities by producing experts in information management.

  • To empower learners with higher managerial skills: Enable learners to acquire higher managerial skills to identify and solve complex problems in their chosen research fields.

Outcomes

  1. Use knowledge of various research methodologies in Social Sciences with special emphasis on library and information Studies.
  2. Show an in-depth knowledge of theories of management and the application of management techniques in the information environment.
  3. Identify children's and young adults' literature and services.
  4. Understand the socio-cultural context of literacy as well as skills in sustaining literary programmes.
  5. Show familiarity with the publishing industry and modern publishing processes.
  6. Organise and manage oneself and ones activities effectively to contribute to full personnel development.
  7. Work effectively as a member of a team, group or organisation.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Learners must produce a mini dissertation on a topic approved by the department and relevant committees.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Analyse and assess information needs and demands of specialised interest groups in society by applying theory to find solutions to relevant problems.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Categorise and evaluate literature effectively.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Design and participate in literacy programmes successfully.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Produce desktop publications and provide solutions to challenges in the publication industry.

  • Adhere to deadlines, prepare well-structured seminars, engage in personal discussions, and monitor personal development.

  • Demonstrate performance during group work discussions and interactions with staff members.

Integrated assessment:

  • Formative assessment: assignments, discussions, brain-storming sessions, research projects, seminars, visual and oral presentations.
  • Summative assessment: Examinations and the production of a mini dissertation.
