Purpose and Rationale

Postgraduate Level Music Training

The first postgraduate level in music training aims to provide learners with advanced knowledge and skills in the field of music. The goal is to contribute not only to the learner's personal development but also to enrich society's cultural landscape.

Objectives:

  1. Cultural Enrichment: The training will enhance the learner's understanding and appreciation of music, contributing to their cultural enrichment.

  2. Community Service: Learners will be equipped to serve the community culturally and educationally through music performances, workshops, and teaching opportunities.

  3. Societal Benefits: The community will benefit from the learner's success through increased access to high-quality musical experiences, educational programs, and cultural events.

  4. Readiness for Further Studies: The training will prepare the learner to pursue further postgraduate studies in music or related fields, continuing their journey of academic and artistic growth.

By successfully completing this postgraduate level music training, the learner will be empowered to make a positive impact both personally and within their community. They will be equipped to share their passion for music, inspire others, and contribute to the cultural fabric of society.

Outcomes

  1. Learners demonstrate skills and knowledge in chosen fields of the study of music and musicology, with focus towards African music and related topics.
  2. Learners demonstrate the ability to write a mini-dissertation or long essay on a topic of (African and related) music history.
  3. Learners can compose music, especially using African (and related) techniques.
  4. Learners can perform music, especially African (and related) music.
  5. Learners acquire knowledge about music technology and the skills to use it.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for this music course include:

  1. Reading and studying music and literature about music: Students will be assessed on their ability to engage with and analyze written material related to music.

  2. Expressing themselves clearly in writing about music: Students will be evaluated on their written communication skills when discussing musical concepts and ideas.

  3. Music sight reading skills: Students will be tested on their ability to sight read music, demonstrating fluency in reading musical notation.

  4. Music theory: Assessment will include written exams on music theory concepts as well as practical application of these concepts in music composition and performance.

  5. Designing and producing a mini-dissertation or long essay: Students will be required to research and write a substantial piece of academic work on a music-related topic.

  6. Portfolio of compositions: Students will create a portfolio that includes original musical compositions, along with accompanying written explanations and recordings of the compositions.

  7. Practical performance: Assessment will involve both individual and group performances, where students showcase their musical skills in a live setting.

  8. Describing and using electronic equipment: Students will demonstrate their ability to describe and operate electronic music equipment effectively.

  9. Maintaining and making African musical instruments: Assessment will include students' proficiency in maintaining and crafting traditional African musical instruments.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Tutorials, assignments, seminars, tests, and practical performances will provide ongoing feedback on students' progress.
  • Summative Assessment: Written and practical assessments, long essay, and portfolio submissions will be used to evaluate students' overall understanding and application of course material.
