Purpose and Rationale

The BA Honours English (Literature) qualification is designed to enhance learners' understanding of literature beyond the undergraduate level. By introducing them to the foundational principles of literary study and criticism as an academic discipline, the program aims to equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge that will serve as a strong basis for future studies in their chosen areas of specialization.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the expertise to contribute to various fields and serve society in a multitude of career paths. These may include roles in education, publishing, editing, public relations, television and film, radio broadcasting, tourism and conservation, advertising, journalism, internet writing, museology, public service, and law.

Overall, the BA Honours English (Literature) qualification not only prepares students for further academic pursuits but also empowers them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond in a wide range of professional endeavors.

Outcomes

  1. Understand the nature of literature on the basis of the theories and practices, which have, characterised it from time immemorial.
  2. Understand the function and value of literature in society.
  3. Analyse literature through the major approaches used by the various theorists/schools.
  4. Imbibe the positive values which literature perennially teaches and thus become more responsible citizens.
  5. Effectively communicate in both oral and written modes the visions of the world presented in literature.
  6. Develop critical and creative faculties.
  7. Develop cultural and aesthetic sensibilities through the analytical study of prescribed texts.
  8. Plan, execute and report research findings in a professional manner.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formal academic essays: Students are required to submit formal academic essays as part of their assignments. These essays should demonstrate critical thinking skills, supported by evidence from scholarly research. The essays should also be well-structured, clear, and coherent in terms of writing style.

  • Oral presentation: In addition to written assignments, students are expected to participate in class discussions and present their papers orally. This oral presentation component allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the material and engage in academic dialogue with their peers.

  • Project work: Both individual and group project work is included in the assessment. These projects are problem-orientated and outcome-based, requiring students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios.

  • Periodic class tests: Throughout the course, students will be given periodic class tests to assess their understanding of the material covered. These tests provide feedback on students' progress and help identify areas for improvement.
