Purpose and Rationale

The qualification aims are as follows:

  1. Undertake community-based, action research into chronic poverty and community development of mainly rural areas.
  2. Debate policy and undertake health systems research for a more socially accountable health care system.
  3. Intellectually apply social theory to reflect on the type of socio-economic transformation needed in South Africa and contribute to social knowledge.
  4. Analyse and direct solutions to problems in the fields of development, labour relations, organisational, and technological environments.

Outcomes

  1. Undertake research to address social and development problems and in this way contribute to socio-economic development.
  2. Apply knowledge and skills for conflict resolution and improving labour relation in the industrial arena.
  3. Debate issues of inequality in the health care arena and thus contribute to policy-making.
  4. Show interest in Sociology become a life-long learner.
  5. Demonstrate intellectual, research and teamwork ability to obtain an occupation in the fields of health, industry, education or public sector.
