Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Aims:

  1. Provide learners with in-depth knowledge of the basic subfields in political science, including:

    • African Politics
    • South African Politics
    • Foreign Policy Analysis
    • Public Policy Analysis
    • International Organisations
    • Political Science Research Methodology
  2. Lay the basis for further training in Political Science with a focus on career-oriented opportunities.

  3. Enable learners to acquire knowledge in political research methodology, theories, and techniques for use in research projects.

  4. Provide learners with specialized theoretical knowledge, experience, analytical, and technical skills.

  5. Equip learners with the necessary political and economic knowledge in South African, regional, continental, and international politics.

Outcomes

  1. Theory, historical trends and contemporary issues which constitute the core of political science as an academic discipline.
  2. Understanding of theoretical and methodological aspects of political science research.
  3. Be able to formulate research topics, and questions in political science, collect and interpret data, and write a comprehensive political science research report.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  • Communicate critically and effectively: Students are expected to demonstrate critical thinking and effective communication skills in their written and oral work.
  • Write critically: Students should be able to write in a critical manner, analyzing information and presenting their arguments effectively.
  • Collect, organise, analyse and critically evaluate information: Students need to demonstrate the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and critically evaluate information to support their research and arguments.
  • Work independently, with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, and community: Students should be able to work both independently and collaboratively with others, understanding the dynamics of teamwork and group work.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Writing of research reports, a thesis, a journal article, and an oral defense: Students will be assessed on their ability to write various academic documents and defend their work orally.
  • Seminar presentation, written assignments, written examinations in all the modules, and a mini dissertation: Assessment methods will include seminar presentations, written assignments, examinations, and a mini dissertation, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills across various formats.
