Agriculture and Nature Conservation - Secondary Agriculture
The agricultural industry is a major sector in the South African economy, playing a crucial role in meeting increasing food demands, providing employment opportunities, adding value, and fostering linkages with other sectors of the economy.
The Faculty of Agriculture aims to educate learners for life, equipping them with skills to tackle the challenges of a dynamic agriculture sector, with a specific emphasis on small-scale agriculture. The faculty, mainly through the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development, offers a program in Agricultural Extension to meet this objective.
The Agricultural Extension program is designed to equip learners with analytical, reasoning, and communication skills essential for the agricultural extension profession. The education provided empowers learners to critically assess real-life problems relevant to their chosen career path. Graduates of the program find employment in various sectors such as government, agribusiness, private consultancies, extension projects, education, and even start their own businesses.
This program prepares learners for lifelong education and skills development by actively promoting a variety of development activities. It aims to cultivate enthusiasm and a passion for learning and research, fostering independent and critical inquiry. Additionally, the program encourages and rewards innovation, entrepreneurship, and excellence.
The B. Agric. Honours in Agricultural Extension offers students specialized knowledge in Agricultural Extension and introduces them to research principles and methodology to further enhance their skills and knowledge in the field.
