Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

A person achieving this qualification will be competent to analyse, integrate, and apply scientific theoretical and clinical knowledge to perform advanced and specialised procedures, management, research, and problem-solving to work independently and in a supervisory capacity within radiation therapy. Learners will have comprehensive, in-depth knowledge and research skills in the field of radiography. An attitude of lifelong learning will be fostered, ensuring continuing self-development and development in the field. The purpose of this qualification is to register an additional qualification with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Outcomes

  1. Synthesize different immobilisation aids to obtain accurate positioning for specialised therapeutic procedures.
  2. Apply scientific knowledge and techniques to plan specialized treatment.
  3. Apply the knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology as applicable to the elective fields.
  4. Apply complex imaging and therapeutic systems appropriate to the specialised fields
  5. Access therapeutic techniques in specialised fields.
  6. Apply pattern recognition to the management, treatment and care of the patient. Two: Functions in the oncology team in the development and review of protocols/clinical trials in order to maintain standards of management of oncology patients and control of the holistic radiation oncology care of the patient in order to offer an optimal service.
  7. Develop quality assurance policy according to international acceptable standards.
  8. Implementation of Quality Assurance programs for optimal radiotherapy service.
  9. Manage all the procedures and patient care linked to the elective fields. Three: Apply management skills in a supervisory capacity of a radiotherapy division.
  10. Formulate departmental policy according to the needs of the institution and the clients
  11. Compile and manage departmental budget according to needs and available financial resources.
  12. Develop and maintain human resource programmes within a section of a radiotherapy service (ensure continuous professional development).
  13. Administer control for optimal radiation oncology service in the institution. Four: Implement research principles and promote a research climate.
  14. Implement and develop applicable research.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of immobilisation and localisation aids, including effective production and evaluation of merits of techniques.
  2. Understanding of techniques, evaluation of merits, and application in elective fields.
  3. Synthesis of anatomy, physiology, and pathology knowledge to appreciate technique relevance.
  4. Selection of imaging and therapeutic systems based on scientific grounds.
  5. Evaluation of treatment techniques for therapeutic value and contribution to treatment protocol development.
  6. Recognition of normal and abnormal appearances, and technical application of pattern recognition.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  1. Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of standards and radiation laws.
  2. Effective implementation of Quality Assurance programs and review for improvement.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of procedures in line with radiation protection guidelines, maintaining communication with patients and stakeholders, and making effective short and long term decisions for quality radiographic service.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  1. Development, review, and implementation of policies and organizational procedures.
  2. Demonstration of knowledge of basic financial principles, timely submission of budgets.
  3. Appropriate recruitment and placement of personnel, implementation of orientation qualifications and performance appraisal systems, conflict resolution, cultural diversity support, work ethics encouragement, and upholding of regulations and guidelines.
  4. Meeting stakeholder requirements, accurate stock control, maintenance of departmental statistics and records, and accountability for relevant equipment.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  1. Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of research principles, participation in research projects and clinical trials, identification of research needs in elective fields, and development of protocols for participation and improvement of treatment techniques and services.
  2. Application of research principles/skills for data acquisition, completion of publications and presentations.

  • Portfolios.
  • Simulations.
  • Work-place assessments.
  • Written assessments.
  • Oral assessments.
  • Other (Research project completed and evaluated by internal and external assessors and moderators).

Formative Assessment:

  • Constant supervision of senior academic and clinical personnel.
  • Completion of personal evaluation forms.
  • Summative evaluation through portfolio assessment, written assessments, oral and practical assessments.

These assessments ensure comprehensive evaluation of theoretical knowledge, acquired experience, and clinical/practical skills of the learner.
