Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to develop managerial, research, and problem-solving skills in diagnostic radiography. The qualification aims to provide South Africa with specialist radiographers in the field of total quality management. Learners will have specialized technical competencies, management, and research skills in the field of radiography. An attitude of lifelong learning will be fostered, ensuring continuing self-development and development in this field. The purpose of this qualification is to register an additional qualification with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Assessment Criteria

  1. The radiographer demonstrates expertise in utilizing specialized knowledge, skills, and equipment to produce high-quality images for patient management. They exercise critical judgement, maintain image quality, and possess problem-solving skills to rectify errors. They assess radiographic images for abnormal findings and provide relevant information for diagnosis and patient care.

  2. The radiographer makes effective decisions to ensure quality radiographic services, developing and implementing principles of quality assurance. They continuously monitor equipment and procedures, incorporating problem-solving skills into decision-making processes.

  3. The radiographer is involved in designing and planning imaging departments, writing specifications, and advising on equipment purchases.

  4. They manage the learning environment for students and practitioners, upholding ethical and professional standards in radiographic services. They encourage a good work ethos, demonstrate entrepreneurial insight, and support continuing professional development programs.

  5. The radiographer generates and monitors financial statements and budgets for department operations, analyzing and improving financial management systems. They administer and review the strategic plan annually according to identified criteria.

  6. They utilize information from various resources, conduct comprehensive literature reviews, and develop relevant research proposals with appropriate methodologies. They gather, process, and interpret data ethically, executing the research process successfully. Assessment methods include portfolios, written and oral examinations, and other strategies to measure knowledge, performance, values, and attitudes. Formative and summative evaluations are conducted to ensure a high standard of assessment.
