Qualification Purpose

Purpose

This integrated whole qualification aims to equip individuals with the necessary competencies (knowledge and skills) to:

  • Be employed in the food industry as food product developers, food quality controllers, and marketers of food products and/or services.
  • Become food service system managers in both the private and public sectors.
  • Work as food researchers in the food industry, contributing to research and development within the country.
  • Establish themselves as entrepreneurs within the food industry, creating job opportunities for others in the sector.
  • Contribute directly and indirectly to the economic growth and development of the country through active and productive participation.

Justification

The South African Food Industry is in need of individuals in middle and senior management roles who possess strong management training along with specialized knowledge of food products and services. In order to compete in the global market, the industry requires competent professionals who can lead as researchers, planners, managers, and trainers to ensure that local standards meet international benchmarks.

The competitive nature of the food industry demands individuals with advanced cognitive skills acquired through specialized training. Such individuals are able to identify challenges and offer effective solutions in their respective areas of expertise.

With a growing emphasis on health foods and healthy eating habits, driven by increased health awareness and the adoption of healthier lifestyles, there is a need for nutrient-rich, cost-effective food products to enhance people's nutritional well-being. Therefore, there is a critical need to train individuals who can conduct research and develop products that cater to consumer demands for healthier options.

Assessment Criteria

Associated assessment will be performed to ensure that the learner has achieved the purpose of the qualification. This will include written, oral, and practical examinations moderated by internal and external assessors.

Other associated assessments can include some or all of the following for practical work, assignments, and projects:

  • Simulation
  • Product samples
  • Portfolio

Integrated assessment methods may involve:
