Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences

Health Sciences and Social Services - Promotive Health and Developmental Services

Purpose and Rationale

The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the basic medical sciences, with a specific focus on the structure and function of the human body. This will provide opportunities for continued, personal intellectual growth.

The second purpose of the qualification is to provide the learner with such a broad background in the basic medical sciences, that he/she will be able to continue their study in any related science.

The third purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with questioning minds and research skills in medical science in general.

Outcomes

  1. Obtain sound knowledge of the structure and function of the human body.
  2. Apply basic anatomical and physiological techniques.
  3. Apply basic research techniques and complete a small research project satisfactorily. Critical cross-field outcomes: Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions, using critical and creative thinking, have been made. Comply with the ethics demanded by science and medicine. Use science and technology effectively and critically. Working effectively with others as a member of a team, especially in applying anatomical and physiological techniques.

Assessment Criteria

Anatomy and Physiology Assessment Criteria

  1. Demonstrate Appropriate Theoretical Knowledge:

    • Understand key concepts in anatomy and physiology.
    • Explain the relationship between structure and function in the human body.
    • Apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.
  2. Perform Appropriate Anatomical and Physiological Techniques Satisfactorily:

    • Demonstrate proficiency in conducting anatomical dissections.
    • Perform physiological experiments accurately.
    • Identify anatomical structures correctly in practical assessments.
  3. Collect, Analyse, Organise, and Critically Evaluate General Anatomical and Physiological Literature:

    • Gather relevant information from anatomical and physiological literature.
    • Critically analyse research findings.
    • Organise information in a coherent manner for further learning.
  4. Write a Proposal for a Small Research Project:

    • Title: [Title of the Research Project]
    • Introduction: Background information, rationale, and research question.
    • Objectives: Clear and specific research objectives.
    • Methods: Detailed description of research methods and data analysis techniques.
    • Significance: Importance of the research project and potential impact.
    • Timeline: Proposed timeline for completion of the project.
    • References: Properly cited sources.
  5. Complete the Research Project According to Accepted Norms:

    • Adhere to ethical guidelines in research.
    • Conduct experiments or data collection as per the research proposal.
    • Analyse and interpret results accurately.
    • Write a comprehensive research report following academic standards.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Work-place assessments: Evaluation of practical skills in a work setting.
  • Written examinations: Assessing theoretical knowledge through written tests.
  • Oral examinations: Presenting and defending research findings orally.
  • Practical projects: Executing hands-on anatomical and physiological tasks.

By meeting these assessment criteria, students can demonstrate a strong understanding of anatomy and physiology principles and apply them effectively in research projects and practical settings.
