Purpose and Rationale

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare, at professional degree level, a person for registration with the South African Nursing Council as a general nurse (including community health nurse and psychiatric nurse) and midwife. Furthermore, the aim is to produce nursing graduates who will be professionally equipped at nationally and internationally recognized standards to serve the South African community. They will be able to function independently in the community as primary health care practitioners and/or in hospital-based practice.

  2. Communication Skills

    • Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication with individuals, families, communities, and healthcare team members.
    • Communicate appropriately in various nursing contexts including counseling, teaching, management, and research.
  3. Interprofessional Collaboration

    • Understand professional health disciplines and work effectively within a healthcare team.
    • Respect the roles of other healthcare workers and demonstrate willingness to collaborate.
    • Assume a leadership role in healthcare or community teams.
  4. Professional Development

    • Use learning strategies for continuous professional development.
    • Acknowledge responsibility for skill maintenance and seek help when needed.
    • Identify personal limitations and engage in self-audit and peer review processes.
  5. Ethical and Legal Practice

    • Empower communities to take responsibility for their health.
    • Identify environmental hazards and propose solutions.

Integrated Assessment

In the final year, learners are evaluated on their cognitive and clinical reasoning skills, psychomotor skills, and patient-centered care. This assessment includes problem-solving, decision-making based on evidence, reflection on practice, and application of knowledge in diverse social and clinical settings.
