Building on the undergraduate work, the focus of the Honours programme will be to broaden the student's knowledge and skills in the tourism sphere and to provide a sound strategic framework and approach to the management of tourism organisations within the dynamically changing environment.
Given the anticipated growth in the tourism industry, both globally and in South Africa, the overall goal of the Honours programme in Tourism Management is to equip the students with the necessary advanced knowledge, expertise and strategic skills to enable them to enter the tourism industry at a competitive level and to add value to the tourism industry in the operational, managerial and strategic spheres.
Assessment Criteria:
Demonstrates understanding of strategic managerial functions in the tourism industry
Identifies and addresses critical issues in key sectors of the tourism industry
Develops a comprehensive strategic and business plan for a tourism enterprise and destination
Integrates various assessment methods such as portfolios, simulations, work-place assessments, written and oral examinations, and research reports
Shows proficiency in applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations
Communicates effectively through written and oral presentations
Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the context of the tourism industry
Shows creativity and innovation in developing strategies for tourism enterprises
Adheres to ethical standards and practices in the field of tourism management
Collaborates effectively with team members and stakeholders in implementing strategic plans
Assessment Methods:
Portfolios: Students compile a collection of their work, including strategic plans, research reports, and reflective essays.
Simulations: Students participate in simulated scenarios where they must make strategic decisions for a tourism enterprise.
Work-place assessments: Students are evaluated on their performance in real-world work settings, demonstrating their ability to implement strategic plans effectively.
Written examinations: Students complete written exams to demonstrate their understanding of strategic managerial functions and critical issues in the tourism industry.
Oral examinations: Students participate in oral exams where they discuss their strategic and business plans for tourism enterprises and destinations.
Research Report: Students conduct in-depth research on a specific topic related to the tourism industry and present their findings in a comprehensive report.
