Qualification Summary

Purpose:

The Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management aims to address the global skills shortage in the tourism industry and promote employment opportunities for learners. It prepares individuals for various job opportunities in the government and private sectors, as well as entrepreneurship ventures. The qualification focuses on developing higher-order thinking skills by applying strategic managerial skills to understand complex tourism-related issues such as sustainability, development, and marketing. Learners will be equipped with research skills and the ability to solve specific tourism-related problems at an advanced level. The strategic management skills acquired will contribute to the growth of the tourism industry in South Africa.

Rationale:

The programme was developed to replace the phased-out BTech Tourism Management qualification, aligning with HEQSF requirements at NQF level 7. The South African government's emphasis on doubling the number of tourism employees by 2030 highlights the need for increased managerial capacity in the industry. Sustainable tourism growth necessitates effective strategic management skills, which this qualification aims to provide. Modules such as Niche Tourism, Tourism Development, and Research Methodology are included to address specific industry needs and contribute to continued industry growth.

  • The qualification aligns with the National Skills Development Plan and contributes to employment creation and economic development in South Africa.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Apply integrated tourism context strategic managerial skills to demonstrate a sound understanding and ability to critically assess complex tourism-related issues (e.g. sustainability, development, planning, marketing, control, evaluation and the industry life-cycle) through utilizing research-informed local, national and global tourism industry information.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Identify, analyse, and solve specific tourism-related problems such as but not limited to sustainability, development, socio-cultural aspects and marketing at an advanced level by applying enhanced strategic management skills, and research methodologies.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Integrate and implement knowledge and understanding of tourism management principles and practices by aligning and applying these to the strategic management of individual and group tourism-related projects.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Comprehend and apply managerial ethical principles and professional ethics.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Conceptualise and design a strategic and marketing plan, including branding, in developing a niche tourism product or service within the South African tourism context.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of research methodologies, skills and the ability to identify research problems in the tourism industry in preparing for and allowing learners to articulate into Post Graduate studies in Tourism Management.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT:

The aim of the assessment in the design of the qualifications is to integrate assessment exit-level outcomes across the modules. Assessments within the qualification design are developed to enhance integrated teaching and learning practices.

Formative assessment:

  • Class tests: The semester content is divided equally among three class tests.
  • Written assignments: Individual or group work based on case studies for one or more chapters.
  • Group presentation: Groups assigned topics based on chapter outcomes, with a marking rubric provided beforehand.

Summative assessment:

  • Summative assessments upon module completion can be through final exams or portfolios of evidence.
  • Class tests: Two tests to be written (one per semester).
  • Written assignments: Completion of individual written assignments.
  • Group Class presentation: Oral class presentation (individual presentation).
  • Continuous assessment: Contributes 75% to the year mark, with a final summative assessment (presentation) of 25% contributing to the final mark.
  • Feedback and Resubmission: Feedback given after each assessment, learners who fail have the opportunity to re-submit with a maximum re-submission mark of 50%.
