The Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management aims to address the global skills shortage in the tourism industry and promote employment opportunities for learners. It prepares individuals for various job opportunities in the government and private sectors, as well as entrepreneurship ventures. The qualification focuses on developing higher-order thinking skills by applying strategic managerial skills to understand complex tourism-related issues such as sustainability, development, and marketing. Learners will be equipped with research skills and the ability to solve specific tourism-related problems at an advanced level. The strategic management skills acquired will contribute to the growth of the tourism industry in South Africa.
The programme was developed to replace the phased-out BTech Tourism Management qualification, aligning with HEQSF requirements at NQF level 7. The South African government's emphasis on doubling the number of tourism employees by 2030 highlights the need for increased managerial capacity in the industry. Sustainable tourism growth necessitates effective strategic management skills, which this qualification aims to provide. Modules such as Niche Tourism, Tourism Development, and Research Methodology are included to address specific industry needs and contribute to continued industry growth.
By offering advanced skills and knowledge in tourism management, the qualification aims to enhance the quality and competitiveness of the tourism industry in South Africa.
The aim of the assessment in the design of the qualifications is to integrate assessment exit-level outcomes across the modules. Assessments within the qualification design are developed to enhance integrated teaching and learning practices.
