Bachelor of Education Honours in Language Education

Purpose:

The purpose of the Bachelor of Education Honours in Language Education is to deepen learners' theoretical and pedagogical knowledge of Language Education. This qualification targets teachers, academics, and other social science practitioners in the field of Language Education. Emphasizing a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, the program aims to explore the symbiotic relationship between theory and practice to enhance learners' understanding of teaching, learning, and assessment in Language Education. In addition, it focuses on developing learners' research skills under supervision.

The language education specialization qualification aims to:

  1. Prepare learners for research-based postgraduate studies in language education.
  2. Provide specialized knowledge in theory and practice of language teaching across seven languages.
  3. Enhance learners' expertise in a specific component within their chosen language.

  1. Apply the methodology and techniques of the field of language education research and perform research under supervision aimed at actual and relevant problems within the field of language education applying adhering to sound ethical practices.

Apply extensive and deepened knowledge of internationally acclaimed theories of language acquisition and language education as well as specialised knowledge of language education in practice with the emphasis on self-directed learning, problem -solving and the utilisation of technology within the multicultural and multilingual context of the South African education system.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the linguistic structure of the chosen language to diagnose and address problems in learners' language usage.
  4. Demonstrate consolidated and deepened expertise as well as the critical understanding of a component of the language of choice which entails critical interrogation and synthesis of applicable academic literature regarding the linguistics or literature of one of seven languages and an awareness of the crucial role of these in language teaching practice or a relevant actual aspect of language teaching and learning in general.

  • Identify a researchable problem in the field of Language Education: Learners should be able to identify a research problem within the South African language teaching context, supported by existing literature and research.
  • Justify research designs/strategies: Learners should be able to justify the use of different research designs/strategies such as qualitative-quantitative, confirmatory-exploratory, and basic-applied in research articles.
  • Analyse research approaches: Learners should be able to analyse and evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of different research approaches and qualitative/quantitative methods within Language Education research.
  • Investigate teaching, learning, and assessment scenarios: Learners should be able to identify and analyse scenarios related to language teaching, learning, and assessment and apply suitable research methods to address these scenarios.
  • Select appropriate design and methods: Learners should be able to select an appropriate research design, methods, and strategy to investigate the identified problem in Language Education.
  • Prepare and conduct research: Learners should be able to prepare an approved research proposal and successfully conduct the proposed research using appropriate techniques and technological tools.
  • Write a scientific report: Learners should be able to write a scientifically sound report including problem statement, research design, methods, data collection, analysis, and interpretation to arrive at justifiable conclusions.
  • Ethical considerations: Learners should be aware of the legal requirements associated with research ethics, especially concerning human subjects, and adhere to ethical practices in participant selection and research planning.
