Communication Studies and Language - Language
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages aims to expand its Mandarin programme to the postgraduate level as part of a strategic initiative. Mandarin was initially introduced as a first-year module in 2000 and is currently available as a major within the Bachelor of Arts Humanities and Bachelor of Arts Language and Culture programmes. The proposed postgraduate programme will align with the existing Honours programmes in German and French within the Department.
It is crucial for the Department of Modern Foreign Languages to diversify its academic offerings by introducing Mandarin at the postgraduate level. This initiative aims to develop graduates who are proficient in cultural mediation between South Africa and the People's Republic of China. The Department observed a significant interest in Mandarin among students, with 22 third-year students enrolled in the programme in 2008, surpassing the numbers in German and French. Many of these students have expressed a desire to further their studies at the postgraduate level, reflecting a growing demand for Mandarin proficiency in academic and professional spheres.
Integrated Assessment:
Due to the small number of students, academic staff will maintain regular individual contact with each student to monitor their progress effectively.
Assessment will be conducted in accordance with internationally recognised criteria to ensure high standards.
External examiners will moderate all exams, as well as the research papers, to maintain the quality and fairness of assessments.
An external review panel will be convened every 6 years to guarantee the transparency, validity, and reliability of assessment practices.
