Qualification in Medical Laboratory Sciences

Purpose

This qualification aims to develop academic skills, values, and attributes necessary for a practitioner with solid ethical principles and a commitment to life-long learning. It prepares learners to become medical laboratory scientists working in diagnostic services and conducting research. The qualification focuses on six key areas:

  1. Diagnostic techniques for patient diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Embracing new technology and trends for professional development.
  3. Conducting research to enhance South African medical services.
  4. Developing management and quality assurance skills for effective laboratory services.
  5. Understanding ethical and safety considerations.
  6. Cultivating empathy and communication skills for effective information delivery in healthcare.

Upon completion, graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate laboratory tests with patho-physiological conditions.
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies for improved practices.
  • Conduct research in medical laboratory sciences.
  • Apply management and entrepreneurship skills.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements related to quality, ethics, and safety.

Successful completion will enable graduates to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Laboratory Scientists.

Rationale

Medical laboratory scientists play a crucial role in healthcare by providing essential information for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. They require strong scientific knowledge, reasoning ability, and empathy. There is a shortage of skilled Medical Laboratory Scientists in South Africa, and this qualification addresses that gap by providing advanced competencies at NQF Level 8. The sector demands higher-level skills to meet the requirements of the HPCSA. Graduates will have opportunities for career advancement within various healthcare organizations, including government departments, laboratory services, research facilities, and medical practitioners. This qualification aims to produce graduates with operational and management competencies, preparing them for leadership roles in the healthcare sector.

Outcomes

  1. Integrate laboratory tests with Patho-physiological conditions in a chosen field of specialisation in accordance with statutory and operational requirements.
  2. Critically evaluate current and new trends in technology to improve practices and to solve problems in a variety of contexts.
  3. Conduct research in the field of medical laboratory sciences, in compliance with legislated and ethical research principles.
  4. Apply management and entrepreneurship skills in the context of medical laboratory sciences.
