Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Leadership

Services - Hospitality, Tourism, Travel, Gaming and Leisure

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The primary purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Leadership is to provide an interdisciplinary qualification for experienced hospitality professionals who aim to specialize in hospitality leadership. Additionally, this qualification aims to offer access to lifelong learning opportunities for continuous personal and professional growth through the completion of a hospitality leadership research project with the inclusion of research methodology. This qualification prepares learners to transition into a Postgraduate Diploma in a related field at NQF Level 8.

Upon completion, learners will possess theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to exhibit competencies in accountability, ethical decision-making, and future-focused problem-solving within the dynamic hospitality industry. The Exit Level Outcomes align with NQF Level 7 descriptors, preparing learners to practice and exhibit responsibility and innovation as current and future hospitality leaders.

Rationale:

The demand for skilled hospitality leaders aligns with the growth needs in Higher Education as recognized by the South African government. The hospitality and tourism sectors are significant contributors to the country's economic growth, necessitating a capacity for effective leadership in the industry. The industry faces challenges such as emerging market economy, political instability, and societal inequality, accentuating the need for skilled professionals.

The Advanced Diploma addresses the need for continuing professional development (CPD) for hospitality and tourism professionals, especially those in senior or management positions. It responds to the identified need for advanced qualifications and equips learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead hospitality organizations effectively in the global market.

As the hospitality industry experiences disruptions like digital platforms, over commoditization, and international issues, the qualification emphasizes effective leadership for sustainable development. It aims to produce innovative and strategic leaders capable of navigating the complexities of the industry and making informed decisions in the face of ethical dilemmas. This qualification fills the gap by focusing on leadership rather than just management in the hospitality sector.
