Purpose and Rationale

Purpose: The Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery is comprehensive, aiming to produce competent professional nurse and midwife practitioners for various health service settings. This qualification equips learners with skills, knowledge, and attributes to contribute meaningfully and sustainably to health services. Learners develop a sense of equality, justice, and service ethics to work responsibly and accountably. Additionally, learners gain transferable skills applicable to other professions, disciplines, and daily life, including:

  • A systematic solution-based problem-solving approach.
  • An empowerment-based self and others development approach.
  • Competence in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to assess, implement, and manage health and other policies.
  • Capability to plan, implement, and manage projects of diverse natures.
  • Research capacity.

Rationale: The qualification integrates nursing care encompassing curative nursing, disease prevention, and health promotion for individuals, families, and communities in varied settings to enhance primary health care. Its objectives are to:

  • Enable comprehensive care provision as a registered professional nurse.
  • Provide a broad nursing perspective and skills to screen and refer patients appropriately.
  • Empower nurses to manage nursing care in different healthcare settings independently and responsibly.
  • Accommodate diverse learners to fulfill required duties, given they meet admission criteria and health standards.
  • Offer practical grounding and opportunities for further academic pursuits, specialization, and research.
  • Prepare nurses to address current healthcare service demands, particularly disease burdens, with cost-effective measures aligned with primary health care principles.

The qualified learner will be adept in maternity care, general nursing science, community health, and mental health, meeting the country's service delivery requirements effectively within the primary health care framework.

Outcomes

  1. Identify and address ethical and legal issues based on critical reflection on the suitability of different ethical value (and legal) systems to the nursing and midwifery practice within the legal framework.
  2. Apply knowledge of biological and natural sciences, psycho-social sciences and pharmacology in the provision of safe nursing and midwifery care, throughout the life span in a variety of health care settings and communities in response to population needs.
  3. Effectively manage a health care unit and health facility based on the understanding of roles and relationships within the multidisciplinary team.
  4. Access, produce and distribute information effectively to a range of audiences, including health information system.
  5. Utilise research in investigating nursing, midwifery and health-related problems to improve quality of care.
  6. Apply learning strategies effectively to address their own and other's professionals and personal ongoing learning needs in a self-critical manner.
  7. Apply knowledge of theories, methods and techniques in the practice of safe clinical nursing that is responsive to the needs of the individual, the family and the community, following the national legislative and policy frameworks at all levels of health care.
  8. Provide safe and quality midwifery and neonatal care in a scientific integrated and evidence-based approach in all health care setting.

  • Use technology effectively for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Provide appropriate health care based on comprehensive health assessment.
  • Deliver nursing care to long-term and terminally ill patients.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 8:

  • Prepare women for pregnancy, childbirth, and family changes.
  • Monitor mother and foetus during labour and delivery.
  • Integrate care postnatally for mother and child.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Learners must be competent in all Exit Level Outcomes.
  • Formative assessment includes theoretical and practical assessments.
  • Classroom and clinical assessments are integrated to evaluate theory and practice.
  • Summative assessment occurs at the end of a section or qualification to determine progression.
