Purpose

The purpose of the qualification is to develop a competent learner who has a thorough grounding in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for the radiation therapy and oncology profession. Through work integrated learning, the learner will gain experience in applying knowledge and skills in a workplace context. The qualification aims to enable the learner to:

  • Become a reflective practitioner and a lifelong learner in the profession, contributing to the community and society.
  • Acquire skills in management and research to work independently within the healthcare team.
  • Contribute to the body of knowledge in the profession.
  • Be socially and ethically responsible within the healthcare system.
  • Acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes through academic modules and clinical experience.
  • Undertake research to inform good practice.
  • Perform planning, dose calculation, and administration of ionizing radiation for patient treatment.
  • Implement total quality management, provide ethical patient care, and uphold patient welfare.
  • Apply human rights, ethics, and medical law principles.
  • Apply knowledge, skills, and values related to electives (general education outcomes) to be well-rounded citizens.
  • Meet the Council of Higher Education and Department of Health (DoH) goals for SA learners.
  • Register with the statutory for HPCSA as a Radiation Therapy and Oncology Radiographer upon successful completion.

  2. Competently perform radiotherapy and oncology procedures to ensure optimal treatment of malignant and benign tumours of all systems of the human body and immobilisation of the patient.
  3. Develop critical enquiry and apply complex research skills to conduct formal and informal research within an area of a specialised field in the profession of radiography, provide creative insights and rigorous interpretation of findings to solve problems and present the results.
  4. Integrate and apply knowledge of entrepreneurship and the management functions in complex and dynamic situations within a radiation therapy and oncology context in order to take full responsibility and accountability for the management of a public or private department in terms of human resources, procurement, ethics, human rights, medical law and quality assurance both as an employee and an employer.
  5. Demonstrate advanced values systems, knowledge and skills that will enable and enhance meaningful participation in society, contribute towards developing sustainable communities, and establish a firm foundation for the assumption of a productive and responsible role in the workplace and beyond.

  • Interrogation and solving of simple and complex technology problems within the context of radiation therapy and oncology.
  • Establishment, development, and utilization of new protocols and methods to maintain equipment and prevent faults/errors.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Correct operation of treatment machines for optimal treatment planning.
  • Adequate use of patient positioning devices according to department protocols for patient immobilisation.
  • Performance of planning procedures based on anatomical, pathological, and clinical data obtained through imaging techniques like CT, MRI, PET, and Ultrasound.
  • Conducting computerized treatment plans (2D and 3D) to ensure radiation doses do not exceed tolerance levels of normal tissue.
  • Competent application of radiation protection protocols/standards to minimize radiation dose to patients, radiation workers, and the public.

  • Application of advanced knowledge of research theories, designs, and methodologies throughout the research process.
  • Development of a research proposal meeting department, faculty, and university standards.
  • Conducting a research study within the field of radiation therapy and oncology adhering to research and ethics principles.
