Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with:

  1. A qualification that can be registered with the Professional Board of Occupational Therapy (HPCSA)
  2. Sound scientific knowledge and competence to practice occupational therapy in a wide variety of public and private welfare, educational, and industrial settings, specifically at all levels of healthcare.
  3. A responsible attitude towards meeting the challenging and changing health needs of the country, and a commitment to improving the quality of occupational therapy services.
  4. Integrated therapeutic, organizational, and management competencies to plan, resource, and manage occupational therapy services for individuals, groups, and communities.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of natural, social, clinical and occupational sciences
  2. Plan & implement health promotion programmes for optimal occupational performance.
  3. Apply scientific occupational therapy skills and technologies in the delivery of comprehensive occupational therapy to the patient, family and community. 5 Function within a multi-disciplinary health related team. 6 Demonstrate a holistic approach to client/patient care. 7 Conduct and utilise research to plan, implement and evaluate concepts and strategies to ensure quality practice. 8 Behave in a professional, responsible, ethical manner. To solve problems by means of a holistic approach to client/patient's needs, the following assessment criteria are considered:

  1. Correct selection of screening, assessment tools and techniques: Select appropriate tools and techniques to gather relevant information about the client's needs.

  2. Accurate and effective recording of assessment information: Record assessment information accurately to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the client's situation.

  3. Accurate interpretation of all information to make an occupational performance diagnosis: Analyze assessment information to make a diagnosis that considers all aspects of the client's needs.

Relate Theoretical and Practical Knowledge to the Clinical or Clients Environment

To relate theoretical and practical knowledge to the clinical or client's environment, the following assessment criteria are considered:

  1. Develop and implement a specific occupational therapy intervention plan indicating specific skills: Create an intervention plan that applies theoretical knowledge to address the client's needs effectively.

  2. Client/patient responses to interventions are evaluated systematically and regularly: Monitor and assess the client's progress to make necessary adjustments to the intervention plan.

  3. Appropriate intervention planning and efficient execution of the plan with effective outcomes: Implement the intervention plan efficiently to achieve positive outcomes for the client.

Present Case Studies to Communicate Learning Gained from Fieldwork Experience

To present case studies to communicate learning gained from fieldwork experience, the following assessment criteria are considered:

  1. Accurate documentation of procedures and results, including evaluation of the process: Document all procedures and results accurately to communicate the effectiveness of the intervention.

  2. Professional conduct: Demonstrate professionalism in presenting case studies and interacting with clients.

Plan and Implement Health-Related Programmes by Empowering Individuals and Communities

To plan and implement health-related programs by empowering individuals and communities, the following assessment criteria are considered:

  1. Report formally on research findings: Present research findings in a formal report to contribute to the development of health-related programs.

To ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved, the following integrated assessment methods are utilized:

  • Written, oral, and clinical examinations: Evaluate theoretical knowledge and practical skills through various examination methods.
