Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose

The purpose of the qualification is to provide a specialised education in music at lower postgraduate level, equivalent to the new NQF Level 8. The qualification aims to equip learners with the knowledge base, theory, and methodology of music, enabling them to perform at the level equivalent to Honours (NQF Level 8).

Upon completion, learners will possess a well-developed, coherent, and critical understanding of music theories and practices. They will be able to conduct research, critique scholarship, make sound theoretical judgments based on evidence, and think critically within the discipline. Additionally, learners will have an understanding of research methods, techniques, and technologies to select appropriate ones for specific research problems. They will be adept at identifying, analyzing, and resolving complex and/or practical issues using theory-driven arguments and evidence-based solutions. Effective information retrieval, management skills, and the ability to identify, critically analyze, synthesize and independently evaluate qualitative data will also be developed. Furthermore, learners will engage with current research and scholarly literature in music, demonstrating proficiency in traditional music and instruments of the Eastern Cape.

The qualification aims to promote transformation in music, inclusive of African expressive culture within the broader context of world music. Learners will be proficient in presenting and communicating academic and/or professional work effectively to diverse audiences using various media suited to the context.

Rationale

The rationale of the qualification is to prepare learners for careers in the music profession as performers, arrangers, composers, researchers, or music educators. Graduates will gain a comprehensive and systematic knowledge base in music, specialized knowledge in either Performance or Musicology and Ethnomusicology. Advanced musical proficiency, research skills, and the ability to apply theory and methodology within a specific research context are expected outcomes of this qualification.

Designed to cultivate knowledge and practical skills, learners can choose electives to specialize in either Performance or Musicology and Ethnomusicology. This specialization paves the way for a career path towards advanced professional or research skills in the music field.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Time Management: Demonstrating planning, execution, and review according to an agreed schedule.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrating effective communication in personal, social, and professional roles.
  • Ethical Practices: Formulating and applying ethical practices and values in the music profession through case studies.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Defining and explaining occupational health, safety, and environmental issues in music practice through case studies.
  • Entrepreneurial Skills: Applying entrepreneurial and project management principles in case studies.
  • Finance Management: Explaining finance management skills in personal finances using appropriate scenarios.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Performance Check: Checking performance for consistency and accuracy against musical score or stated criteria.
  • Preferred Version: Explaining reasons for using a preferred version in terms of standard musical practice.
  • Technical Exercises: Performing technical exercises (scales, arpeggios) at a commensurate degree of difficulty.
  • Instrument Mechanism: Understanding and applying the working mechanism of own instrument/s.
  • Instrument Maintenance: Maintaining own instrument/s according to accepted practice.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Musical Notation: Identifying and notating intervals, melodies, triads, quartads, and rhythmic patterns in staff notation.
  • Rhythmic Skills: Clapping/tapping rhythmic patterns and playing diatonic triads, chromatic quartads, and quartads in harmonic progressions.
  • Listening Skills: Listening to rhythmic and cyclic patterns and identifying them in notation.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Musical Analysis: Selecting musical examples, identifying parameters for analysis, and applying appropriate approaches for music analysis.
  • Interpretation: Describing and interpreting music based on applied parameters and analysis.
  • Conclusions: Drawing conclusions on adherence to or departure from conventions in musical styles.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Research Skills: Locating appropriate sources, understanding research methodologies, and selecting a specific methodology for researching a musical topic.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Case Studies: Evaluating the influence of events on music, analyzing music's role in influencing attitudes and actions, and studying the relationship between music and the economy.
  • Aesthetic Analysis: Analyzing aesthetic and philosophical stances in musical expression and comparing representative styles through case studies.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Ensemble Performance: Interpreting and following conductor's instructions, assessing intonation accuracy, and collaborating within an ensemble for appropriate performance.
  • Presentation Skills: Applying presentation principles for a professional performance to concert standards.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 8:

  • Programme Notes: Compiling informative programme notes, demonstrating knowledge of repertoire, and presenting tutoring material at different graded levels.
  • Historical Practices: Demonstrating critical understanding of historically-informed performance practices related to the chosen instrument.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 9:

  • Research Evaluation: Investigating musicological and ethnomusicological theories and methods, developing research proposals, and managing data collection processes for research reports.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 10:

  • Music Analysis: Analyzing music genres over the past 100 years, describing aesthetic debates in South African music, and analyzing major composers and compositional techniques.
  • Composition Skills: Composing and scoring music idiomatic for various settings, arranging music for different contexts.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 11:

  • Music Technology: Defining terminology related to music technology, studying its development, and using hardware/software for sound analysis, synthesis, and editing.
  • Arrangement Skills: Exploring sounds, concepts, and repertoires for arrangement in different settings.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 12:

  • Music Education: Studying teaching methods, philosophies, and technologies in music education, demonstrating understanding in educational contexts, and arranging movements for learners.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Recital: Presenting a recital, performing unknown pieces, and demonstrating various skills on chosen instrument/s.
  • Research Project: Completing a research project using a selected methodology and presenting scholarly research.
  • Teaching Sessions: Demonstrating music education approaches and methods in teaching sessions.
  • Examination: Taking theoretical examinations for assessment of knowledge and understanding.
