Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Library and Information Science qualification is to acquire an intensive, focused, and applied specialization that meets the current requirements of the Library and Information Science sector. Furthermore, it aims to enable learners to gain the competence to deliver an effective information service in a global environment towards meeting the requirements of clients in a diverse and changing society.

Learners achieving this qualification will be able to supervise and manage an information center. The development of the qualification provides Library and Information Science learners with an opportunity for vertical articulation. Upon completion, learners will be able to articulate into cognate NQF 8 qualifications, especially the Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science. The qualification aims to contribute to the personal development and growth of learners by enhancing their qualifications and providing them with the knowledge and skills required for supervisory and managerial positions within the Library and Information Science sector.

Rationale:

The Advanced Diploma falls within the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics and serves as a natural progression from the Diploma in Library and Information Studies. With the phasing out of the BTech from 2020, there is a need for this qualification for learners wishing to pursue further studies. The qualification addresses the opportunity for vertical integration of learners within the Library and Information Science sector.

Stakeholder needs identified a shortage of trained librarians, leading to the development of the Advanced Diploma in Library and Information Science. The qualification aims to contribute to addressing the demand for specialized skills in the Library and Information Science sector. It strives for excellence and sustainability in providing relevant education, training, research, and community engagement to meet the needs of learners and the library and information services nationally.

The qualification aligns with the South African Government's emphasis on widening the information technology infrastructure and the role of library and information services therein. It is committed to democracy, transparency, integrity, and respect in a people-centered context. The advancement of Information and Communications Technologies calls for preparing learners for the current information society, with interdisciplinary studies in areas like management, information technology, and education.

Specializations in Library Sciences include digital libraries, archives, records management, rare manuscripts, school libraries, among others. The qualification provides learners with knowledge and skills in evaluating technology-related developments for application in Library and Information Science fields. The changing landscape of the sector in the 21st century has created an opportunity for learners to specialize as professionals in Library and Information Science, leading to the creation and justification of this Advanced Diploma in Library and Information Science.

Outcomes

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment practices will be open, transparent, fair, valid, and reliable and ensure that no learner is disadvantaged in any way whatsoever.
  • There will be the integration of the assessment of the modules entitled Knowledge Management and Information and Communications Technology into the assessments for discipline-specific modules such as Digitization and Organization and Representation of Information.
  • Smaller projects in modules that draw knowledge from supporting subject areas.
  • Integrated Assessment will be within the context of Research Skills within the modules.
  • The Integrated Assessments will make use of a range of formative and summative assessment tools to assess combinations of applied and reflective competencies, which may include research projects, written assignments, written tests, case studies, and case presentations.
