Purpose and Rationale

Program Overview

Purpose: The purpose of the B. Med Science in Anatomy program is to provide a well-rounded, broad education that equips graduates with the knowledge base and theory to assist in clinical application and lab work. It enables students to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in an academic or professional context, preparing them for postgraduate study or general employment. Rationale:
Anatomy is a basic science that can be integrated across various modules within the School and College curriculum, such as ethics, law, comparative anatomy, cytology, virology, and haematology. This interdisciplinary approach creates a holistic teaching and learning environment. Training in the scientific method provides a foundation for understanding congenital abnormalities, population differences, exposure to health conditions, variations predisposing to abnormal development, and prevalent disease states in the region. This program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in the field of Anatomy and related areas.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Have knowledge and understanding of Ethics and Law for anatomical sciences, gross anatomy, comparative skeletal anatomy, and laboratory techniques.
  • Developed practical skills to conduct problem or enquiry driven research.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Source, understand, and be appropriately critical of scientific literature.
  • Assess core scientific knowledge to develop new strategies for researching biological and medical problems.
  • Understand medical research, its process, purpose, and limitations.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Aware of the role of Medical Science in South Africa and global society.
  • Detailed knowledge in at least one significant field of Medical Science.
  • Value integrity and ethics in addressing medical problems.
  • Articulate understanding of own values, respect for others, and ability to view ethical dilemmas from multiple perspectives.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Detailed understanding of limb anatomy and related anatomical structures.
  • Read, analyze, explain, and critically evaluate prescribed anatomical readings.
  • Acquire interpersonal and collaborative skills through groupwork in practicals and projects.
  • Acquire basic dissecting and research skills through completion of research project module.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative assessments include assignments, tests, group work, and projects throughout the year.
  • Evaluation combines theory and practical assessments.
  • Seminar presentations offer opportunities for formative integrative assessment of knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
  • Summative assessments consist of a maximum of four assessments for each 16-credit module, including theory and spotter examinations.
