Purpose

This Bachelor of Accounting Science prepares learners to enter a range of professional careers in accounting, which will achieve related purposes:

  1. Provide learners with professional knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence for personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity, and valuable contributions to society in accounting, auditing, financial management, and tax fields.

  2. Enable learners to analyze, interpret, and apply accounting, auditing, financial management, and taxation knowledge in various financial fields.

  3. Provide a base for further specialization towards a professional career in accounting, auditing, and related fields.

  4. Include general modules like business management, economics, computer skills, and business communication to adapt to the dynamic and competitive business environment.

Rationale

The rationale for this qualification includes:

  1. Meeting the demand for managers with financial management skills in the business and public sectors, as well as learners with specialized competencies in accounting, auditing, and taxation.

  2. Preparing learners for professional careers in accounting and finance, aligning with the National Development Plan and National Scarce Skills List.

  3. Focusing on financial accounting, auditing, taxation, management accounting, and finance for learners aiming to become Chartered Accountants (CA).

  4. Requiring completion of a Certificate in Theory of Accounting (CTA) or a Higher Diploma in Accountancy (HDipAcc) after the Bachelor's degree.

  5. Eligibility for a three-year learnership with a registered training office (for auditing specialization) or an approved training organization (for financial management specialization).

  6. Offering a career path as an Associate General Accountant (AGA) without needing postgraduate qualifications or board examinations.

  7. Qualifying as an Associate General Accountant (SA) typically takes 6 years (3-year qualification + three years of internship).

  • Demonstrate an understanding of various management principles and practices and the organizational environment.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Solve problems in various financial fields using necessary mathematical skills.
  • Understand and perform financial functions in a computerized environment.
  • Explore different quantitative techniques that can assist an accountant with important decision-making.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of costing concepts and their application.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of advanced cost and management concepts.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of financial and risk management.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Use the current accepted technical language of accounting practices and prepare annual financial statements and reports of groups of companies and public sector entities.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of aspects relating to the field of financial accounting.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of advanced aspects relating to financial accounting.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of aspects relating to the field of auditing.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of advanced aspects relating to auditing.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of taxation.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Demonstrate computer skills.
  • Understand effective communication skills in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of business ethics.
  • Understand the implications of commercial law in the business environment.
  • Comply with legal aspects of the accounting profession.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ethics and corporate governance.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative assessments are integrated into the learning materials and consist of informal and formal activities.
  • Formative assessments cover a limited range of Exit Level Outcomes and provide development feedback to learners.
  • Summative assessment is usually conducted through examinations, weighted at 40% of the final mark for each module.
  • Summative assessment covers a range of Exit Level Outcomes and tests a learner's ability to manage and integrate knowledge to achieve outcomes.
