Purpose and Rationale

Commerce Intermediate Level Qualification

Purpose:

  • To provide learners with a deep understanding of Business Management, Human Resources Management, Economics, and Accounting.
  • To equip learners with the ability to critically question assumptions, understand elementary research methods, and express their opinions coherently.
  • To prepare learners for a wide range of professions in Commerce, essential for societal welfare.
  • To develop lateral, critical, and creative thinking skills for life-long learning.
  • To instill principles of critical citizenship and the ability to propose, execute, analyze, and report on basic research projects logically.

Rationale:

  • Relevance: This qualification meets the needs of the South African labor market by producing graduates fit for management and law roles.
  • NQF Objectives: Facilitates access, mobility, and progression in Management and Law career paths.
  • Research Capacity: Develops a research capacity in graduates for academic and professional advancement.
  • Personal & Economic Development: Contributes to individual and societal development, addressing workplace needs.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a scope of knowledge and knowledge literacy in the chosen discipline of specialisation. Consolidate and deepen one's expertise in a particular discipline.

  3. Demonstrate the ability to identify and address ethical issues in the related field of specialisation.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of knowledge application in one of the following fields, viz. Business Management, Human Resources Management, Economics, or Accounting.

    • Utilize multiple sources to gain knowledge and insight.
    • Synthesize academic arguments from various sources.
  2. Draw on the applicable body of knowledge in the discipline and identify, analyse, and address problems.

    • Present and communicate information effectively.
    • Present and communicate occupational ideas and texts effectively.

Associated Assessment Criteria 3:

  1. Demonstrate the learner's critical reflection on the suitability of different ethical value systems and the application to specific contexts.

Associated Assessment Criteria 4:

  1. Report research under supervision of at least 30 credits in the form of a research component that reflects theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Learning and assessment across exit level outcomes within the qualification should be integrated to ensure a well-structured cohesive qualification.
  • Formative assessments provide continuous learning and feedback to learners.
  • Summative assessments ensure a judgment of learning at exit level outcomes.
  • Assessments should assess the learner's ability to integrate the larger body of knowledge, competencies, and attitudes represented by the exit-level outcomes.
  • Assessments may focus on the qualification as a whole or as components.
