Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

  • Learners will command a deeper grasp of Arts, Languages, and Social Sciences.
  • Learners will be able to place new knowledge in context and use appropriate methods to seek resolution of problems.
  • Learners will know a variety of basic scholarly and intellectual competencies.
  • Learners will be able to question critically the assumptions of a limited range of theories and authorities.
  • Learners will develop an understanding of elementary research methods used within humanities disciplines.
  • Learners will have the ability to give an accurate account of scholarly positions and express their own opinions clearly and coherently in written and oral communication.
  • Learners will have a well-rounded and broad education in the Humanities, preparing them for a wide range of professions crucial to society.
  • Learners will be able to think laterally, critically, and creatively, and be prepared for lifelong learning.
  • Learners will understand the principles of critical citizenship.
  • Learners will have skills to propose a basic research project, execute, analyze, and report on it logically and knowledgeably.

Rationale:

  • The learning programs address the Humanities and Social Sciences needs of the South African labor market.
  • Graduates will be trained to work in Humanities and Social Sciences, addressing national priorities for social and personal development, especially in rural areas.
  • The qualification aligns with the objectives of the National Qualification Framework (NQF) by facilitating access, mobility, and progression in Humanities and Social Sciences at NQF Level 8.

Outcomes

  • Make an informed decision on the types of methods and techniques available for research execution, analysis, and reporting within the field of specialization.
  • Solve problems relating to the field of specialization within limited boundaries.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Make decisions on ethical values and practices within the field of specialization.
  • Communicate effectively regarding topics within one field of specialization through various assessment strategies.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Engage in reflective writing by producing an honours dissertation following basic research problem identification, exploration, and solution.

Integrated Assessment:
