Human and Social Studies - General Social Science
The purpose of the qualification is to prepare Psychometrists to function effectively in any appropriate setting, including independent practice, by providing training and experience within the relevant scope of practice. It will provide learners with advanced knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to assessing, understanding, explaining, and developing human behavior in a multicultural context. In addition, the qualification will give learners entrance into the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology, after which they can register and practice as a Psychometrist. Value will be added to the qualifying individual in terms of relevant knowledge and skills, and these will have pertinent benefits to the institution and society in which they will practice the knowledge and skills.
The qualification is intended to increase the quality and quantity of people able to register and practice as Psychometrists. This is a first step in training in research, and therefore this qualification is important for providing a pool of people able to train in research at a higher level.
Administer, score and interpret psychological assessment measures: Students should apply the assessment criteria across Exit Level Outcomes. They should demonstrate the ability to administer, score, and provisionally interpret psychological assessment measures in an ethical and professional manner.
Prepare written reports: Students need to prepare well-structured written reports on the results of psychological assessment measures they have been trained to use. Reports should be clear, concise, and professional.
Demonstrate communication skills: Students must demonstrate appropriate listening, clarifying, probing, and reflection skills within both group and individual intervention contexts. Effective communication is key to successful interventions.
Identify intervention needs: Students should be able to identify when a psycho-educational intervention or development program is needed and determine the most effective type of intervention for the situation.
Implement interventions: Students need to implement specific psycho-educational intervention and development programs in an ethical and professional manner, ensuring the well-being of the individuals involved.
Conduct research: Students should be able to identify, plan, conduct, and report on a research study within the field of psychology.
Identify personal growth needs: Students need to identify their personal growth needs and utilize appropriate facilitative opportunities to address them effectively.
Evaluate interventions: Students should be able to generate a critical evaluation of psychological assessment and developmental interventions within the multi-cultural South African context, considering diverse cultural backgrounds.
Understand interdisciplinary interactions: Students must demonstrate a critical understanding of how psychology interacts synergistically with related disciplines and professions.
Cultural awareness: Students should identify how their cultural background and values impact the processes of psychological assessment, intervention, development, and research.
Research project: The research project allows for integrated assessment, testing students' ability to conduct a thorough study within the field.
Practical and case-based studies: These provide opportunities for practical assessment, simulating real-world scenarios for students to apply their knowledge and skills.
Continuous assessment: Foundational knowledge competencies are continuously assessed through tests, assignments, and examinations.
Assessment portfolio: Students are required to develop and present an assessment portfolio containing various components, including a summary, log sheet, completed assessment protocols, case study, and critical reflection.
Research treatise: Students must present a research treatise including a problem statement, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and critical overview of the study.
