Purpose and Rationale

The qualification title has changed from BACCALAUREUS COMMERCII (Monetary Economics) to Bachelor of Commerce in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics to better reflect the specialization in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics. This change aligns the name and core modules of the qualification with the specialized focus on these fields of study, providing students with a more tailored educational experience.

The modules offered in this qualification have been adjusted to be in line with the specialized focus on Econometrics and Quantitative Economics. Additionally, the Department now offers learners the opportunity to specialize in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics at an Honours level, addressing the need for specialized undergraduate qualifications in these areas.

Changes to the rules of access have been made, and certain modules have been added or removed to better prepare students in the field of Econometrics and Quantitative Economics. These adjustments aim to provide learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the job market as economists in various sectors such as Banking, Finance, Insurance, Entrepreneurship, Education, Business Management, or Public Financial Administration.

The rationale behind these changes is to offer learners a recognized qualification that will enhance their career opportunities and equip them with the skills needed for economic roles across different sectors. The updated qualification aims to provide graduates with advanced knowledge and specialized skills in economics, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society and pursue further opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Outcomes

  1. Apply the necessary mathematical foundation to achieve a mature and enduring understanding of economic models and of the basic principles of econometrics principles of economics in particular, the financial and monetary systems and financial and monetary markets.
  2. Apply the skills and knowledge pertaining to quantitative methods required to comprehend economic models and econometrics.
  3. Undertake analysis of different economic issues applying econometric techniques.
  4. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques applied in economic analysis.

  6. Have a commanding knowledge of the application of calculus of one and several variable function calculus and of sequence, series and vector calculus within a finance environment.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Outcome Level:

  1. Explain the role of financial and monetary markets and institutions in the economy.
  2. Conduct a range of analyses on financial processes and institutions to ascertain their importance on the economy and make recommendations to stakeholders in public or private institution.
  3. Apply the skills, values, and knowledge pertaining to monetary economics, banking, and business on all levels of organizations.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding and ability to interpret monetary policy.
  5. Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively in the working environment.

Integrated Assessment:

Formative Assessment practices that will be implemented:

  • Learners write two formal tests in each semester course.
  • Self-assessment through working on simulated questions and suggested solutions independently (Assignments).

Summative Assessment practices that will be implemented:

  • Integrated Assessment focusing on the achievement of exit-level outcomes.
  • Summative Assessment in conjunction with Formative Assessment.
  • Three-hour written examinations at the end of each semester course covering material from all modules.
  • Prerequisite of prior knowledge from preceding years.
  • Assessment on the ability to apply and integrate previously acquired knowledge with current subject matter.
