Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to provide a high standard of education in Human Molecular Biology. It aims to produce quality learners who have acquired key skills in human molecular biology, genetics, and/or molecular biology and who are interested in pursuing further postgraduate studies in Human Molecular Biology. The goal is to produce scientists who have the necessary knowledge, understanding, and proficiencies to contribute effectively to the field of Human Molecular Biology.

Furthermore, the qualification seeks to enable learners to independently perform scientific research and possess the essential skills for comprehending research at both professional and postgraduate levels. This will enhance the role of Human Molecular Biology in patient care, ensuring that professionals in the field are adequately trained and capable of making significant contributions.

Rationale

Currently, there is a shortage of scientists trained in Molecular Biology in South Africa. To address this gap, there is a need to provide basic postgraduate training in the application of molecular biology in humans for further postgraduate research or for the application of human molecular diagnostics. There is a growing interest in utilizing molecular biology in human research and diagnostics among learners who are not inclined towards pursuing a qualification in medicine but are keen on working in a molecular laboratory conducting research and diagnostics on humans.

The qualification aims to cater to the needs of potential stakeholders such as commercial pathology laboratories, private research laboratories, drug companies engaged in research and development, academic research institutions involved in molecular biology-based research on humans, as well as companies supplying reagents and equipment tailored for human molecular biology. By meeting these needs, the qualification can help address the shortage of skilled professionals in the field of Human Molecular Biology and support advancements in research and diagnostics related to human health.
