Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Title: Candidate Senior Architectural Technologist

Purpose

This qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to work as Candidate Senior Architectural Technologists. It equips learners to handle designs of complex buildings in various contexts while considering environmental, economic, and cultural factors. Additionally, it prepares learners for further specialized studies such as the Master of Architecture (Professional), Level 9.

Upon completing this qualification, learners will be able to:

  • Develop designs for multi-storey and long-span structures based on independent research and environmental considerations.
  • Produce design documentation for buildings on sensitive sites with various constraints.
  • Make judgment-based decisions in applying architectural design in different environments.

Academic Purpose The qualification strengthens learners' knowledge in Architectural Design, Construction, and Professional Practice. It covers architectural theory, history, research methods, critical writing, urban studies, and landscape studies.

Rationale

This qualification is industry-focused, aligning with South Africa's National Development Plan and the growing importance of construction and architectural professionals in the region. Outcomes

  1. Prepare and develop an appropriate design for a complex building project and present its synthesis in a logical, responsible, appropriate and economical manner in an urban, and a sub-urban or rural context.
  2. Critically engage with a framework of social, cultural, economic, political and ecological concerns that shape architecture in contemporary society.
  3. Use a range of computer technology presently in use in architectural practices to the execution of work.
  4. Utilise critical urban issues, show awareness of, and sensitivity to urban aspects when designing individual buildings.
  5. Produce a set of advanced working drawings for a complex building, completed to acceptable practice standards, as part of a set of contract documents.
  6. Use architectural practice terminologies, basic concepts and principles of architectural practice needed to operate in the architectural environment and manage an efficient architectural business.

  • Utilise precedent studies and architectural theoretical knowledge to demonstrate aesthetically and environmentally sound architectural design knowledge skills.
  • Resolve complex architectural problems using precedent studies and theoretical knowledge.
  • Employ personal and professional initiative and responsibilities in architectural design.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Utilise knowledge of architectural theory at local and global levels.
  • Demonstrate understanding of architectural history and theory based on historical precedents.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Utilise digital technologies in design practice and understand their impact on the built environment.
  • Develop awareness of methods and representations for design and the development of design tools.
  • Apply Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a design tool, focusing on sustainability and building performance analysis.
  • Be familiar with various software applications relevant to architectural design.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Understand the history of cities, urbanism, and landscape architecture.
  • Exhibit insight into urban history, issues, and processes.
  • Develop awareness of the historical formation of urban areas at different levels.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Utilise architectural theory related to design and construction technology.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the built environment and how it informs technology and design.
  • Apply analytical research processes to design and technology.
  • Apply knowledge of construction methods and materials in complex building projects.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Understand architectural professionalism and the operation of the architectural profession in accordance with government legislation.
  • Describe the roles of relevant bodies such as SACAP and SAIA in the architectural profession.
  • Examine the management principles applicable to running a professional architectural office.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Modules are evaluated through continuous assessment or examinations.
  • Formative assessments such as projects, tutorials, and tests are conducted throughout the year.
  • Qualitative feedback on student work is provided daily in studio-based modules.
  • Final summative assessments are conducted at the end of the year.
  • Insights from various modules contribute to the core module, Design.
