Purpose and Rationale

Purpose: The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with knowledge and skills related to the construction and property industries and how to manage these. Moreover, this qualification provides a foundation for further intellectual development and opportunities to enter into postgraduate studies. In addition, the qualification aims to educate and train learners that have theoretical and practical experience in Construction Management. These learners can apply educational knowledge, skills, principles, and methods to the practical building sciences profession. They are equipped with the required skills and expertise to contribute to the expansion of the building sector in the broad, responding to the needs of society, developing public infrastructure, and understanding the dynamics of trade unions. It further provides learners with the necessary foundational knowledge to continue postgraduate studies.

Rationale: The qualification provides an undergraduate qualification that portrays academic integrity and quality, assuring intellectual credibility as part of an academic culture. This qualification supports relevant scientific education and meets national requirements, as well as promotes adequate infrastructure and human capital development to competitively position South Africa in the Building Sciences environment. The qualification contributes to continuous proactive intellectual, physical, and cultural transformation, as well as service to the community as the qualification addresses national and global challenges in the field of Building Sciences. Graduates are educated to make a positive and noticeable impact on national and international challenges related to the construction industry and to global challenges related to managing projects for adequate building structures and other current issues in the field of Building and Construction Sciences. Learners will be able to establish, maintain, and disseminate a dynamic research-based body of knowledge pertaining to construction management in South Africa, in order to ensure ongoing development in the quality of management and leadership in the construction management profession. In addition, this qualification aims to provide the construction professions in South Africa with leaners who meet the academic requirements for professional registration.

Outcomes

  1. Interpret, value, cost and scope a structure or building in respect of predicted outcomes regarding structure, budget, procurement, and design.
  2. Predict the life cycle performance of structures and buildings in respect of cost and quality.
  3. Interpret the scope and cost of a structure or building in terms of manageability, income, quality and time of completion.
  4. Apply the principles of sound development theory by analysing the needs of a client.
  5. Apply the principles of models and standards to advise on and perform various procurement methods by analysing a structure or building, and advise on payments and certification during construction.

Assessment Criteria

  • Performing, managing, and administering basic functions in the Construction Industry
  • Measuring, pricing, and analyzing development projects
  • Forecasting outcomes of development projects regarding cost and prices
  • Drafting cost plans and performing cost control and cost design
  • Managing the development process of building and construction projects

Integrated Assessment: The assessment strategy includes both formative and summative assessment opportunities, as well as continuous assessment. Continuous assessment is utilized in building modules. Learners are required to provide evidence of learning competency in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitude. This assessment approach allows learners to monitor their progress regularly, address any issues as they arise, and includes:

  • Presentations and projects on an approved building sciences topic to test and provide insight into the complexity of applied building sciences and construction management
  • Integrated continuous and formative assessment to demonstrate achieved competencies required by the qualification outcomes through tests, assignments, orals, examinations, presentations, research projects, and practical reports.
