Purpose and Rationale

Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts

The Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts offers graduates access to diverse areas of the performing arts, allowing them to develop interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary skills. Through three core modules, graduates will also gain fundamental research skills. The program provides specialisation in disciplines such as Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, and Design through elective courses within each discipline.

  • Core Modules:

    • Three modules, each worth 20 credits, focus on interdisciplinary aspects of performing arts.
  • Elective Specialisations:

    • Students can choose one of three tracks: Dance, Theatre Arts and Design, or Music.
    • Each track includes a compulsory 30-credit simulated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) module and an elective module worth 30 credits.
  • Curriculum Design:

    • The curriculum balances theoretical, practical, and immersive knowledge and skills.
    • Delivers greater theoretical rigor and practical skill development in elective streams of Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts and Design.
  • Rationale:

    • Aims to provide vocational training for theatre artists, technical theatre designers, musicians, dancers, and vocal artists.
    • Consolidates existing qualifications into one multi-disciplinary offering.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate integrated knowledge of central areas and detailed knowledge of specialised areas within the Africanisation of performing arts and creative industries contexts, towards understanding and evaluating types of knowledge as related and contested.
  2. Apply discipline specificity, or inter-and multi-disciplinary application towards identifying, analysing, evaluating, and addressing complex problems within the performing arts and creative industries through applied evidence-based solutions and theory driven arguments.
  3. Develop appropriate processes of information gathering and independently validate sources of information towards effective data management within the Performing Arts.
  4. Develop and communicate individual ideas and opinions through well-formed arguments using appropriate academic, professional or occupational discourse within the Africanisation of discipline specificity or inter- and multi-disciplinary performing arts context.
  5. Identify, evaluate and address the learning needs of self and facilitate collaborative learning processes.

  • Create and prepare a performance displaying acting range across various styles and media.
  • Link theory to practice of a selected directing style and critically evaluate vocational aptitude.
  • Produce a short multi-lingual script reflecting societal language varieties.
  • Skillfully apply expressionism, abstract expressionism, and minimalism in somatic performance.
  • Analyse and understand stylised musical theatre performance.

  • Demonstrate techniques for identifying traditional South African folk melodies within the oral tradition.
  • Apply appropriate methods of documentation within the performing arts context.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and skill in South African and contemporary music composition.
  • Demonstrate arranging techniques for Jazz ensemble in African, American Jazz, and contemporary genres.
  • Collect, analyse, and critically evaluate information for writing a formal essay.
  • Compile relevant production information for a live theatrical event and summarise practical implementation processes.
  • Present digital reports.
