Bachelor of Medical Science Honours in Medical Biochemistry

Health Sciences and Social Services - Curative Health

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

This qualification aims to improve the initiative, problem-solving ability, communication skills, and technical expertise of the learner and to provide learners with advanced knowledge and competence in Medical Biochemistry. It also aims to develop independent researchers in health sciences who can contribute to the generation of knowledge at an advanced level by conducting original research that addresses complex context-based issues, under the guidance of the research supervisor.

Rationale:

This qualification extends the knowledge and understanding of Medical Biochemistry to an advanced level and introduces the learner to the research milieu of the life sciences. This qualification will enable learners to develop and become effective and skilled researchers in health sciences, equipped to become research-oriented in their ongoing professional development. The qualification will equip the learner with the knowledge and the skills necessary for employment in pharmaceutical and biological research laboratories, the food and beverage industry, and in tertiary institutions (including teaching and research positions). The qualification is thus necessary to provide the country with a cadre of researchers in health sciences who are able to provide strategic and evidence-informed guidance and contribute in a scholarly way in addressing local, regional, and global health-related issues.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and competence in Medical Biochemistry, initiative, problem-solving ability, communication skills (written and oral) and technical expertise.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding in research methodology, techniques and technologies applicable to Medical Biochemistry research.
  3. Utilise at least 3 specialised skills in designing and implementing a research project that address complex issues in Medical Biochemistry research.
  4. Ensure good and safe laboratory practice.
  5. Carry out experimental work, record data and evaluate results.
  6. Generate a scientific paper that reflects independent thinking, critical analysis, ability to defend findings and insight into Medical Biochemistry research.
  7. Present research findings to a range of audiences using appropriate media or means to disseminate findings.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which environmental toxicants influence human health.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of integrated metabolic pathways and how the presence of various stresses (especially disease states such as diabetes or malnutrition) results in altered metabolism.
  10. Understand the biochemical processes involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases.

Assessment Criteria

Scientific Paper Submission and Oral Presentation

Overview:

The scientific paper submission and oral presentation are key components of the assessment for the research project. This assessment aims to evaluate the learner's understanding and application of key concepts, critical thinking ability, problem-solving skills, and practical knowledge gained throughout the research project.

Assessment Components:

  1. Weekly Research Meetings: Assessment will be based on active participation, contribution to discussions, and progress updates.

  2. Submission of Ethics and Proposal Applications: Evaluation of the learner's ability to adhere to ethical guidelines and develop a sound research proposal.

  3. Presentation of Preliminary Results: Assessment of the learner's presentation skills, clarity of communication, and ability to interpret and discuss preliminary findings.

  4. Scientific Paper Submission: A comprehensive research paper outlining the study background, methods, results, and conclusions must be submitted.

  5. Oral Presentation and Defense: The learner will present their research work to a panel and defend their findings, methodology, and conclusions.

Theory Modules Assessment:

  • Tests and Examinations: Evaluation of the learner's understanding and application of key theoretical concepts.

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills Assessment:

  • Assignments, Tutorials, and Case Studies: Tasks designed to assess the learner's ability to think critically, analyze information, and solve problems effectively.

Practical Knowledge Assessment:

  • Mini-Projects: Practical tasks to assess the learner's application of theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Research Report:

  • The research project will culminate in the production of a research report in the form of a scientific paper, showcasing the learner's ability to conduct independent research and contribute new knowledge to the field.

Future Contributions:

  • It is expected that learners completing this qualification will be equipped to pursue further studies and make valuable contributions to the field, addressing national priorities for growth and development in health sciences.

In conclusion, the scientific paper submission and oral presentation serve as comprehensive assessments of the learner's research skills, critical thinking abilities, and theoretical knowledge. These assessments aim to prepare learners for further academic pursuits and professional contributions in the field of health sciences.
