Purpose and Rationale

Bachelor of Sport Coaching Qualification

Purpose: The Bachelor of Sport Coaching qualification aims to produce competent sport coaches with a comprehensive education, capable of applying sport coaching knowledge, theory, and methodology. Learners will exhibit initiative and responsibility in academic, ethical, and professional contexts. The qualification equips learners to address diverse sport participation needs in South Africa and globally, with a strong understanding of the six primary coaching functions outlined in the International Sport Coaching Framework (ISCF). Graduates will possess the necessary attributes to deliver coaching across various skill levels, sports, and environments.

Rationale: The qualification is designed to advance the establishment of coaching centers of excellence in South Africa and elevate the professional status of sport coaching. Sport coaches play a key role in developing individuals and using sport as a means for social impact. The promotion of mass sport participation and performance development relies heavily on well-educated and skilled sport coaches. Graduates may also gain access to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education and the Coach designation conferred by the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). This qualification empowers graduates to contribute significantly to sport development, from grassroots to elite levels, as teachers or professional coaches.

The program caters to various sports codes, encouraging learners to apply course content to their specific coaching domains. Skills acquired through this qualification are transferrable to other sports-related careers and valued by employers. A clear learning pathway is established, allowing for vertical progression to relevant qualifications at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 8.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate integrated knowledge related to the fields of study that inform sport coaching and apply this knowledge to the athlete/coaching arena.
  2. Apply, reflect on and integrate the principles and theories of psycho-socio sciences and coaching pedagogy, enabling graduates to be able to respond to a broad societal context in which to practise.
  3. Take decisions and act ethically and professionally in sport coaching contexts.
  4. Apply pedagogical principles and reflective practice to sport coaching.
  5. Apply current and relevant theories, principles, paradigms, strategies and functions of management and administration in diverse general and sport coaching contexts.
  6. Use and apply basic principles of ethical research in sport coaching, which includes using current technology to capture, analyse, interpret, apply and disseminate research findings to improve or remediate performance on a local, national and international basis.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Provide a comprehensive explanation of the main knowledge areas that inform sport coaching: Coaching Science, Sport Science, Psycho-social sciences, Sport management.
  • Apply above knowledge to the context of sport coaching, specifically with regard to the sub-areas: Sport coaching pedagogy, Sport coaching in context, Sport coaching excellence.
  • Apply knowledge in Anatomy, Motor Control, Physiology, Exercise physiology, Biomechanics.
  • Incorporate Social sciences of sport.
  • Utilize knowledge in Business functions, General and small business management, entrepreneurship.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Apply relevant theories to sport coaching ensuring holistic athlete development.
  • Understand the special needs of the emerging South African environment.
  • Comply with best practice and understand the function of government and government-related organizations.
  • Address sporting needs for all ages, cultures, genders, social class, beliefs, abilities, and disabilities.
  • Reflect on psychology and sociology in the sport coaching context.
  • Explore coaching pedagogy concepts for applying key teaching principles.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Apply philosophical principles, theories, and concepts of ethics.
  • Demonstrate ethical functioning as a coach.
  • Understand professional boundaries and scope of practice.
  • Implement ethical coaching methods, principles, concepts, communication skills, and planning philosophies.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Self-reflect and self-evaluate as a coach.
  • Select appropriate coaching philosophies.
  • Apply demand-driven coaching methods, learning progressions, and feedback.
  • Understand sport participation plans, risk management programs, coach and athlete development strategies, health promotion, and coaching strategies.
  • Utilize diverse pedagogical strategies in coaching.
  • Understand athletes' identities and their impact on coaching pedagogy.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Understand the importance of the eight management functions.
  • Analyze the external environment of sport business.
  • Apply managerial ethics and social responsibility in sport.
  • Develop a sustainable sport organizational structure.
  • Create and apply financial planning.
  • Manage operations of a sport business practice.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Search for and apply relevant literature and/or theory.
  • Choose ethical research designs for research enquiries.
  • Analyze and interpret empirical data (qualitative and quantitative) and present research findings.
  • Use research for informed, objective, evidence-based problem-solving.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Includes Formative and Summative Assessment opportunities with continuous evaluation.
  • Formative Assessment methods include written tests, practical tests, assignments, case studies, presentations, and more.
  • Summative Assessment includes written examinations for most modules.
  • Practical assessments through a portfolio of evidence, demonstrations, and presentations.
  • Experiential learning assessment through monthly reports, supervisor reports, and a portfolio of evidence on exposure to sport coaching and management.
