Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology - Engineering and Related Design

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The aim of the qualification is to develop an engineering intellectual who can identify, assess, and formulate the engineering needs of the society at large. The program focuses on researching and solving engineering problems creatively and innovatively by applying scientific, mathematical, engineering, economic, and other relevant principles and methods. It prepares learners for a career in engineering science, design, and project-based roles through the fundamental understanding, use, and appropriate application of engineering methods, skills, tools, and information technology. Additionally, the qualification provides a platform for lifelong learning.

Rationale:

The qualification is designed to prepare learners for engineering science, design, and project-based careers. It equips students with a fundamental understanding of engineering methods, skills, tools, and information technology. The program aims to develop individuals who can address engineering challenges effectively and efficiently.

Following an accreditation visit by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the qualification was updated to address industry concerns raised during the visit. The revised qualification was approved and implemented to ensure it meets the standards and expectations of the industry.

Outcomes

Assessment Criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Engineering Problem Solving: Engineering problems are identified, assessed, formulated, interpreted, analysed and solved effectively, creatively and innovatively by applying knowledge of Mathematics, basic science and engineering sciences from first principles.

  2. Project Management: Small engineering projects are planned and managed, demonstrating knowledge, understanding, and insight into socially responsible engineering practice.

  3. Team Participation: Participation in teams, groups, organizations, and communities results in leadership and the performance of critical functions.

  4. Responsibility and Ethical Conduct: Activities are organized and managed responsibly, effectively, professionally and ethically within one's limits of competence, exercising judgment commensurate with knowledge and expertise.

  5. Research and Experimentation: Investigations, research, and/or experiments are effectively planned and conducted by applying appropriate theories and methodologies, with suitable data analysis and interpretation.

  6. Communication Skills: Effective communication is carried out, both orally and in writing, with engineering audiences and the community at large, using appropriate structure, style, and graphical support.

  7. Engineering Methods and Impact: Appropriate engineering methods, skills, tools, technology, and information technology are effectively and critically used in engineering practice, with an understanding and acceptance of responsibility for the impact on society and the environment.

  8. Design and Synthesis: Procedural and non-procedural design and synthesis of components, systems, works, products or processes are performed, with assessment of their social, legal, health, safety, and environmental impacts and benefits.

  9. Learning Strategies: Various learning strategies and skills are employed to master module outcomes, preparing for lifelong learning in the engineering field.

  10. Responsible Citizenship: Responsible citizenship is practiced at local, national, and global levels, acting professionally and ethically.

  11. Cultural Sensitivity: Cultural and aesthetic sensitivity are demonstrated across a range of social contexts in engineering activities.

  12. Education and Career Development: Education and career opportunities are explored, with entrepreneurial opportunities organized and developed through engineering problem-solving, design, technical research, and managerial skills.

Integrated Assessment:

  • All teaching, learning, and assessment activities are linked to module and qualification outcomes.
  • Assessment methods include summative and formative assessments to enhance applied competence and facilitate authentic learning.
  • Assessment is used not only to determine outcomes but also to generate data for grading and provide feedback for curriculum improvement.
  • Assessment methods include tutorials, lab practicals, practical assignments, case studies, group projects, chapter summaries, portfolios, presentations, semester tests, and final examinations.
  • Additionally, investigative projects/assignments, problem solutions, group and individual design assignments and projects, multi-disciplinary projects, case studies, report writing, planning, oral presentations, poster presentations, semester tests, and final examinations are part of the assessment methods.
