Human and Social Studies - General Social Science
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the ability to recognise advanced literature, theories, and concepts in Geography, to competently operate advanced computer analytical software, and to reflect upon application of concepts in the field of Geography and the environment.
The qualification is a specialisation in the field of Geography to prepare the learners for research-based postgraduate study. The qualification serves to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in Geography and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Geography. It also demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.
The following assessment criterion will be integrated across the Exit Level Outcomes:
Identifying Environmental Changes: Students will be required to identify high-level environmental changes, evaluate trends, and propose solutions to negative trends such as Karoo spreading, alien plant infiltration, and population migration.
Contribution to Multidisciplinary Teams: Students will need to contribute effectively as members of multidisciplinary teams working on environmental issues.
Recommendations for Improvement: Students will make recommendations for improving incorrect utilisation, over-utilisation, and unplanned development of the environment.
Data Gathering and Analysis: Students will be expected to take initiative in gathering, analyzing, and organizing data related to the environment, and present their findings in the form of a research report.
Communication Skills: Students will be assessed on their ability to communicate research findings through oral and written presentations.
Field and Analytical Tools: Proficiency in using field and analytical tools such as maps, GIS, air photos, and soil augers for investigating responsible utilisation of the environment will be evaluated.
Understanding Environmental Linkages: Students will explain the degree of variation in linkages between variables in human and physical environments.
Literature Research and Evaluation: Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct literature research, evaluate sources, and formulate independent points of view with correct referencing.
Responsibility in Managing the Biosphere: Students will be assessed on their ability to use and manage the biosphere responsibly and promote environmental responsibility in the community.
Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement: Students will need to convince stakeholders of the importance of the environment for human existence and advocate for creating acceptable living environments in constantly changing urban, agricultural, and mining environments.
Career Opportunities: Students will identify career opportunities in the environmental field and demonstrate knowledge of new technologies applicable in the environment.
