Advanced Core Knowledge and Skills: This program aims to equip students with advanced core knowledge and skills in various specialized aspects of the quantitative sciences, including statistics, logistics, actuarial science, mathematics, and financial mathematics. By doing so, students will be prepared for careers in quantitative areas of both the private and public sectors. Their participation in these sectors will contribute to sustainable growth and development, ultimately maximizing prosperity across all sectors of the economy and society.
Development of Competent Leaders: The program also seeks to develop competent leaders in the fields of quantitative commerce and finance. Through the acquisition of advanced theoretical and applied knowledge and skills, students will be prepared to lead and steer sustainable development, growth, and prosperity in these fields, ensuring they move in the most appropriate direction.
Preparation for Postgraduate Studies: Lastly, the program aims to provide students who wish to pursue further postgraduate studies with a solid academic foundation. By receiving a comprehensive education in quantitative sciences, students will have the necessary base from which to continue their academic pursuits and research in related fields at an advanced level.
The assessment used for this qualification ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved through a range of formative and summative assessment methods. These methods include simulations, computer assignments, workplace assessments, written and oral presentations, and examinations. The required range of modalities is used integratively to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved. Generalising from the assessment of samples to a domain is done in a judicious and planned manner to ensure reliability. The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 7.
Integrated Assessment plays a significant role in the quantitative sciences honours degree program. The assessments are designed to require students to draw on knowledge and expertise from previous years of study. Assessments include cross-disciplinary individual and group assignments, simulations, computer assignments, workplace assessments, written and oral presentations, tests, and examinations. Additionally, students are expected to complete at least one large project, either practical or theoretical, individually or in small teams, and present both written and oral reports on their work.
