Purpose and Rationale

Purpose: The purpose of this qualification is to develop professionally qualified teachers for the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase of schooling. The qualification provides teachers with specialized teaching competence in at least three specializations (one Senior Phase (SP) subject and two Further Education and Training (FET) subjects or one FET subject and two SP subjects). The qualification aims to provide student teachers with:

  • Required subject content knowledge
  • Teaching competence
  • Assessment skills
  • Understanding of critical challenges facing education in South Africa

The qualification imparts skills and techniques needed to integrate learning areas into teaching programs, ensuring classroom competencies are developed over the four-year duration. Teachers will produce appropriate teaching and learning materials tailored to the needs of Senior Phase and Further Education and Training learners. Rationale: The Faculty of Education offers Bachelor of Education in Intermediate and Senior Phase and Bachelor of Education in Further Education and Training programs. This qualification aligns with the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ) by providing specialist teaching competence in at least three specializations. The urgent need for well-trained teachers in South Africa, particularly in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training, necessitates a qualification that produces work-ready teachers capable of implementing strategies for educational improvement. Extensively assessed and mentored school experiences ensure theory is put into professional practice, with structured supervision, mentoring, and assessment in practical learning components.
