Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

  1. The qualification serves to provide continuing professional development to students by deepening their understanding of current thinking, practice, theory, and methodology in a specialized area.
  2. It aims to prepare students for postgraduate study by familiarizing them with theories, methodologies, and practices in specific academic disciplines such as Strategic and Financial Management.

  1. The tourism industry, both globally and in South Africa, is a significant employer and experiences faster growth compared to the overall economy.
  2. There is a constant demand for individuals looking to advance their knowledge in the industry.
  3. The hospitality industry, a key sub-sector of tourism, is vital for economic growth.
  4. The National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) III aims to integrate higher and further education with skills development under a single Department of Higher Education and Training.
  5. The strategy emphasizes partnerships between employers, educational institutions, private training providers, and Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
  6. It focuses on enhancing relationships between public colleges, universities, and SETAs, as well as with employers.
  7. The strategy seeks to increase access to training opportunities, address inequalities related to class, race, gender, age, and disability, and tackle skills shortages and mismatches in the country.
  8. It aims to boost productivity in the economy through the achievement of goals, outcomes, and outputs set by SETAs in collaboration with various educational and training entities.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of individual and corporate issues in strategic change.
  2. Conduct a mini-research project and make a final presentation of the results thereof.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to formulate rationale and implement steps of a hospitality marketing project.
  4. Formulate and implement comprehensive plans for the development of aspects of hospitality at the various geographical levels.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Explain the importance of leadership within an organisation.
  • Explain the unique role of the vision and mission statements in the formulation of a strategy in each case.
  • Discuss the challenges related to the practical implementation of a strategy.
  • Discuss the opportunities and threats related to change dynamics.
  • Identify the commonalities and unique features of two change models.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Explain the different contributions made by Positivism and Interpretivism.
  • Complete a literature review incorporating all relevant aspects of the research project.
  • Compare an experimental and non-experimental research design.
  • Develop appropriate research instruments.
  • Consult a research report to investigate how a research project is planned.
  • Collect and statistically process data.
  • Correctly interpret collected data.
  • Write a report on the project and present it according to guidelines.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis of two competitor profiles in Hospitality marketing.
  • Explain the difference between Strengths and Opportunities in terms of a strategy.
  • Formulate a mission and a set of goal statements for marketing.
  • Explain the elements of a hospitality project appealing to the priorities of a selected market segmentation.
  • Discuss theory and practice regarding product and price strategies.
  • Discuss promotion and distribution strategies.
  • Complete a comparison between services marketing and internal marketing.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Determine and explain the political aspects of the hospitality industry.
  • Discuss the features that identify a specific hospitality project as a "development."

Integrated Assessment:

Assessments are required to start with situations and decisions found within an industrial setting. This enables the integration of assessment by treating outcomes and assessment criteria together, promoting awareness of connections between knowledge, processes, and skills. A variety of assessment methods will be used, including written and oral examinations, problem-solving assignments, projects, presentations, case studies, portfolios, visual diaries, journals, field work, and assessment of competence through simulated and actual work integrated learning. Formative and continuous assessment will occur throughout the year, while summative assessments will be conducted at the end of terms 2 and 4. Maintaining strict security guidelines during assessment compilation is required.
