Purpose and Rationale

This qualification serves three main purposes:

  1. Study Opportunities: The qualification offers learners the chance to study at a qualifying Learner level in five fine art specializations: design and new media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. It equips qualifiers with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue careers in fine art, art theory, arts education, design, new media, and related fields. Additionally, it provides access to postgraduate study opportunities in art education and art practice.

  2. Meeting Societal Needs: The qualification addresses the social and intellectual needs of South Africa by focusing on visual arts practice, interpretation, aesthetics, and other areas of intellectual activities centered on the visual arts.

  3. Addressing Educator Shortages: By opening up postgraduate study paths, the qualification aims to produce a sufficient number of qualified art teachers and lecturers for South African schools and institutions.

Outcomes

  1. Understand visual art related texts, images, processes and perceptual phenomena.
  2. Produce images and analytical texts, which are contextually relevant.
  3. Understand and critically appreciate the contribution of major artistic and cultural activities and performances to community and national life.

Assessment Criteria

Exit Level Outcomes Assessment Criteria:

  1. Analyse and understand signifying practices: Students should be able to comprehend and analyze various signifying practices in social and cultural contexts.

  2. Historical dimensions of culture: Understand the historical aspects of culture and how they influence current signification processes.

  3. Theoretical frameworks: Utilize a range of theoretical frameworks to critically evaluate phenomena in a rigorous manner.

  4. Analyse evidence with historical sensitivity: Interpret evidence and data considering historical forces that shape them.

  5. Interpret visual, discursive, linguistic signs: Read and interpret visual, discursive, linguistic, and cultural signs in the surrounding environment.

  6. Communication skills: Demonstrate clear and fluent writing and speaking abilities, preferably in multiple languages, with English being the minimum requirement.

  7. Imagination and creativity: Engage in expressive activities with imagination and creativity.

  8. Computer literacy: Proficiently use computer technology for various tasks.

  9. Internet research skills: Utilize the internet to locate and access information effectively.

  10. Computer-aided design and editing: Apply appropriate computer-aided design and editing software for tasks.

  11. Life-long learning: Acknowledge the significance of continuous learning and personal development.
