Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The qualification aims to:

  • Equip graduates with the skills to address primary health care needs in South African communities and private practice, and to collaborate with other health care professionals in a professional manner.

  • Provide clinical graduates with the abilities to diagnose and treat patients using the Traditional Health principles and practices of Unani-Tibb at an internationally recognized standard, enabling them to register with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).

  • Establish a foundation for ongoing professional development and research within the field.

Rationale:

Over the past decade, there has been a growing global interest in traditional and alternative medicinal systems, with natural and herbal remedies playing a more significant role in primary health care, particularly in developing countries (WHO Fact Sheet 622).

The program aligns with the university's Areas of Concentration, such as Public Health, Complementary and Traditional Health Systems, and Land, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development. It promotes the use of natural plant-based remedies obtained from industries that uphold sustainable development and natural resource preservation.

By preparing graduates to meet market demands, the program contributes to providing skilled health professionals in a burgeoning field in South Africa, thus benefiting the country's healthcare sector.

Outcomes

  1. Examine, diagnose and treat the range of health problems presenting in this profession using a variety of Unani-Tibb methods and solutions.
  2. Work with others as a member of a professional team, group, organisation or community.
  3. Make appropriate decisions regarding when to make referral to professional colleagues.
  4. Prescribe and dispense basic herbal medicines and natural remedies.
  5. Evaluate appropriate use of remedies given contraindications and possible drug-remedy interactions.
  6. Plan and monitor the management of the six determining factors, nutritional therapeutics and regimental therapy programmes.
  7. Counsel and advice on indicated life-style changes.
  8. Communicate effectively, by oral, electronic and written means with other health care professionals and the general public.
  9. Sustain personal development and learning through continuous professional development and/or research programmes.
  10. Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions, using critical thinking, have been made.
  11. Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, or organisation.
  12. Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively.
  13. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.
  14. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical, and/or language skills in the modes of written and/or oral presentation.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Prescribe, prepare and dispense herbal medicines and natural plant remedies.
  2. Understand the basics of chemical reactions and organic chemistry and principles of physics.
  3. Understand basic principles of Immunity and infection control and its application in clinical medicine, emerging factors and process of infectious diseases.
  4. Assess Western Medical Approaches to nutritional therapy relevant to diseases of lifestyles, the role of nutrition in the diseases of lifestyles.
  5. Examine, diagnose and treat the range of health problems presenting in this profession using a variety of Unani-Tibb methods and solutions.
  6. Work with others as a member of a professional team, group, organization or community.
  7. Make appropriate decisions regarding when to make referral to professional colleagues.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative and Summative Assessment will be used to monitor student progress.
  • Continuous Assessment Strategy includes tasks, assignments, tests, group tasks, presentations, clinical work portfolios, etc.
  • Feedback is provided to support student learning.
  • Modules employ Continuous Evaluation Mark (CEM) with a final examination for summative assessment.
  • Assessment criteria are strictly followed as outlined in module descriptors.
  • Assessments include text comprehension, accessing relevant sources, grasping problems, presenting theoretical and practical assignments, clinical case studies, and solutions to problems.
  • External moderators ensure assessment papers meet standards.
  • Integrated Assessment includes written examinations, individual projects, assignments, and a research project.
  • Learners must demonstrate the ability to make appropriate decisions within the professional code for prescribing, dispensing, and referring patients.
