Purpose:
The qualification aims to:
Equip graduates with the skills to address primary health care needs in South African communities and private practice, and to collaborate with other health care professionals in a professional manner.
Provide clinical graduates with the abilities to diagnose and treat patients using the Traditional Health principles and practices of Unani-Tibb at an internationally recognized standard, enabling them to register with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).
Establish a foundation for ongoing professional development and research within the field.
Rationale:
Over the past decade, there has been a growing global interest in traditional and alternative medicinal systems, with natural and herbal remedies playing a more significant role in primary health care, particularly in developing countries (WHO Fact Sheet 622).
The program aligns with the university's Areas of Concentration, such as Public Health, Complementary and Traditional Health Systems, and Land, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development. It promotes the use of natural plant-based remedies obtained from industries that uphold sustainable development and natural resource preservation.
By preparing graduates to meet market demands, the program contributes to providing skilled health professionals in a burgeoning field in South Africa, thus benefiting the country's healthcare sector.
