Purpose and Rationale

The Bachelor of Administration Honours in Public Administration prepares students for research based Postgraduate study.

The qualification also serves to consolidate and deepen the student's expertise in the field of Public Administration and to develop capacity in the methodology and techniques of research within this field.

It will also prepare students for a career, either as academics or in practice, in Public Administration.

Qualifying students can demonstrate:

  • Systematic knowledge
  • Specialized skills
  • Theoretical competence focusing on or within the context of Public Administration or within an interdisciplinary framework in preparation for learning at an advanced level.

Outcomes

  1. Engage in critical thinking and problem solving in studying topics of a complex and specialised nature.
  2. Reflect on their own knowledge and practice in the light of the theory and practice in Public Administration.
  3. Conduct research.
  4. Communicate research results.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Identify significant problems and problem-areas in Public Administration: Students should be able to identify and describe major issues and challenges within the field of Public Administration.
  • Describe and analyse the main issues involved: Students should demonstrate their ability to describe and critically analyze the main problems and areas of concern in Public Administration.
  • Assess the impact of public sphere policy (including legislation) on society: Students are expected to evaluate how public policies and legislation affect society as a whole.
  • Apply management theories to practical situations in the public and non-governmental spheres: Students should be able to apply management theories to real-world scenarios in both public and non-governmental organizations.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Contextualise problems studied within their own experience: Students should relate the problems studied to their own experiences.
  • Take cognisance of divergent viewpoints and critically evaluate their relative merits to arrive at own viewpoint: Students should consider different perspectives and critically assess their strengths and weaknesses to form their own opinions.
  • Formulate sustained and coherent arguments in response to a variety of Public Administration-related issues: Students should be able to construct logical and well-supported arguments on various Public Administration topics.
  • Formulate responses to resolve concrete and abstract problems in public and non-governmental contexts: Students should develop solutions for both practical and theoretical issues in public and non-governmental settings.
  • Apply learning from individual experience and academic disciplines to political, social, cultural, technological and economic realities, locally and globally: Students should apply their knowledge and experiences to understand the broader implications of Public Administration in various contexts.

  • Document researchable problems: Students should be able to identify and document researchable problems within the field of Public Administration.
  • Demarcate the scope of research, for a limited project, under supervision: Students should define the boundaries of their research projects under supervision.
  • Conceptualise research topic within existing field of discourse and literature: Students should place their research topics within the existing body of knowledge and literature on the subject.
  • Compile a research design in relation to a research problem: Students should create a research design that addresses the research problem effectively.
  • Conduct an independent search for relevant sources: Students should be able to independently search for and evaluate relevant sources for their research.
  • Apply theories and models in the analysis and interpretation of collected data: Students should use appropriate theories and models to analyze and interpret their research data.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Use an acceptable subject-related academic style: Students should demonstrate proficiency in using academic writing conventions specific to Public Administration.
  • Communicate material according to standard academic conventions of presentation: Students should present their work according to accepted academic standards, including proper structuring, referencing, and bibliographies.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Activities, self-assessment questions, and written assignments contribute to the overall module mark.
  • Summative Assessment: Examinations are conducted per module to assess students' understanding and knowledge.
  • Feedback: Feedback on activities, self-assessment questions, assignments, and examinations is provided to students to aid in their learning and improvement.
